(Nov 16 07, 03:35)Ah, thats damn near where I stayed, we were just around the corner from the Gulbenkian and wandered down that street a few times (till we discovered the metro stop at the Cortes Engles at the top o the street. You were right, was a nice quiet area.

don't forget that lisbon is known as the city of the 7 hills. so prepare to do some uphill and downhill walking! it's nothing like london in terms of area or flatness...
i think there have been all good suggestions posted already, i would only reiterate walking through Bairro alto, principe real (above b. alto), baixa/chiado, rossio. All very close to each other and show what lisbon is all about. A cool place to see slso is Miradouro de Santa Catarina, near B. Alto. its a belvedere (?) where all the locals hang out at any time of day (especially at night) for meeting up, having a drink smoking, listening to music and watching that great view over lisbon. Other than that, just walk around those areas and you wont be disappointed! If you have time you should check out Cascais (30 min by train along the coast) which is a small city on the coast. used to be a small fishing village where the royals and nobles of the time vacationed. good sea food, surf and nice to see a bit of outside the city centre! Enjoy

hmm, you stayed at Hotel Dom Manuel I ??. that's my neighbourhood alright.

There's plenty of lookout points, like Miradouro da Graça http://www.flickr.com/search/?s=…
With the combination of trams+maps+guessing you'll get to amazing places ;)

also this is the perfect time of year to visit Sintra, a beautiful village 35km from Lisbon.

Yeah raf, thats usually my aim on holiday! Thats also why I picked Lisbon, haven't heard too much about it so thought it could be worth a visit!
Cheers for all the tips peeps! Keep em coming! oh and keep posting crazy youtube vids, those trams look a wee bit precarious...

drop by nº75 of Rua da Conceição with Rua da Prata (Downtown) to see if you're lucky enough to catch the Roman Cript open. It only opens to the public twice in the year due to maintenance work (it is usually underwater). There's no schedule for it because it must be drained according to the whims of the river.
It's an old set of roman cripts that sustained a building long gone. It's a bit creepy going down there in the middle of a busy street but it's fun.
don't go there if you suffer from claustrophobia though.

(Oct 1 07, 07:16)yeah definitely leave that for locals... falling off the tram+going face down on cobble stone+high chance of getting run over by a local taxi= not so much fun...

and if you feel homesick go here:
that was pilgrimage ground in the good old days of the uni.

I not dead, just takin a break baby!
Its been a hectic couple of weeks so Ive only started to catch up on NT the past week or so. So...
Thanks for all the suggestions, they were kick ass!
Got fucked up on cheap-ass mojitos in Barrio Alto on the first night (the next day was a right-off! Had a delicious lunch in restaurant Eleven, on the hill overlooking Lisbon. Visited the Gulbenkian museum and the castle. Tried salted cod and other delicacies. Lisbon was one of the best city break I've taken in a long while! I gots loads of pics but I have to get me lomos developed.

glad you enjoyed it, mang.
;)
- rafalski0
did you go on the whole citywide tram rollercoaster thingy?
- ian0
Ah, myself and the missus really enjoyed it, both of us Had really bad colds going over though, think thats why the first night got us so bad (that and €3 cocktails!).
You were right about the walk into town, did it the first day 29+ heat, completey buggered us. But the metro is dead easy and cheap and the trams were cool. Really easy to find our way around but felt like we didn't even scratch the surface.
how long did you live there?
