Two words:
Lucas Rossi.

get to the final, play half a song on the live show, then tell the judges to stick it andwalk off the stage. people will love it.

hehe
go for it girl, problem is, if you loose, people will always see you as "that band that lost in that show"
so win....
- TheBlueOne0
If you win does that tie you into producers and other writers who will "guide your career"?
I'm more of an integrity guy..but I'm old..who the fuck knows how the music industry is these days, right? Just leave blood on the floor when you're done, you know what I'm sayin'...

I think the stigma of reality TV only applies if you music is not up to par to begin with. Which is not an issue in your case vespa.
Plus it will become tv trivia lore when all is said in done ;)
"What reality tv show did The Mentalists first appear on?"
On a side note...I was actually walking down the street in SF about a month ago and someone was bumping your "Don't Know What to Do With You" track in their store. I though that was cool.
Best of luck with the competition.

If you care about the longevity of your band, be careful.
I doubt you will be able to play half a song and walk away. You will probably have to sign a 3 record contract before you even know if you win, and if you walk off stage I'm sure you will be breaking a contract and get sued.
In one token, you will get incredible exposure, but you will probably be put in very trying situations with your good friends. That can get sticky.
Have a lawyer read contracts before you sign them, they are utterly confusing.
- nocomply0
do it.
get a lawyer. be careful what you sign.
bring a punk rock attitude and fuck shit up.
i see no reason to pass up this opportunity.

kim - i think you can still do it and maintain integrity - because you had a lot to begin with. plus you guys are massively talented. a major label deal shouldn't be the driving force behind your decision tho - just have fun and slag lilly allen AND alex james off as much as you can!
GOOD LUCK!
- vespa0
Complexfruit, that's so cool!
thanks for all your advice guys, it's a tricky one. we spoke to a lawyer yesterday and she's going through all the contracts now, i'm wary of the whole rights issues business, i mean if we play our songs on the show do they own them?... we can work with any producer we want, which is very important to us.
and apparently there aren't any more celebrity judges, which is good. but damn that means i've lost the opp to heckle AJ and LA. probably a good thing.
- BaskerviIle0
Kim, firstly well done for getting so far, and also for being wary. I've come to see you guys play before and everyone on here knows you have talent.
But I have to say that I don't think that this is the way to go about a long term future in music.
I also know that you're an incredibly talented interaction designer too, with award winning work. You're lucky in that respect, you have 2 talents.
That makes me think that you have the luxury of waiting with the music until you achieve what you want. If all you want is 'your shot' at fame etc, so you can say down the line 'I did the music thing, I was on tv, we sold albums' then go for it. But if you're in it for a career change, longterm then steer clear of this show.Josh Davis is right, the era of the record deal is over, we don't need record companies anymore, they're just glorified pimps, selling you and then charging you for the privilege. This article by Steve Albinii (who produced In Utero for Nirvana) really hits home the figures:

Good luck with whatever you choose. On a side note, if you ever meet Jo Wiley please smack her in the face for me. She really does my head in, acting as if she knows about music, trying to add credibility to shite bands by doing the voiceovers for their tv ads. Grrrrrrr. Same goes for Lily Allen.
- Crouwel0
congrats. i could never do this. exposure like this throws you right into the lion pit. on the other hand, you girls seem no softies, and the music's good, so even when you lose, sane people know the judges suck.
so w'ever, go for it.
x

"kim - i think you can still do it and maintain integrity - because you had a lot to begin with"
jevad makes teh point.
you already have some sort of an established situation, unlike most contestants in any sort of reality show.
- vespa0
hey Baskerville
thanks for the advice, i've read that Steve Albini article before and it's worth reading over and over. it certainly describes my experiences of the music industry accurately!
yea jo whiley - she said alice was too theatrical, whadda dick! alice's theatrical nature is brilliant!
- slappy0
Well my wife watches Australian Idol and I would have never ever considered buying a cd off one of the contestants until last year. As it happened 1 dude called bobby flynn actually makes great music.
Just never ever change anything according to what the show says or wants.
I recon go for it, if you're good you're good.
- chossy0
if you want integrity don't if you want fame and money do
- uncle_helv0
Never heard you're sound Vespa, so I can't comment on talent etc, but have you got to lose, I don't think will harm you're intergrity if you go for it, plus think of the doors it could open ( a lot of people in the industry will be watching!) I agree with baskerville about you having a successful design career infront of you, or should I say living it, just depends what you want more, plus you have something to come back to. DO IT if you don't, you'll never know and that can be more dissapointing than faliure!

i don't know anyone else's opinion vesp, but my immediate reaction was along the lines of 'noooooooooooooooooo', you don't need it and it could hang around your reputation like a bad smell for a long time to come.
However
if you get the chance to stab jo whiley, punch alex james and hit lilly allen with a guitar, than I'm all for it.
best of luck
- uncle_helv0
Wow cool, nice sound, like the video too, oooh I might have to retract what I just said! You should be able to get signed without the help of a talent show!!! I guess you might lose a bit of respect from your hardcore fan base if you were to appear on a TV talent show, however it sounds a lot more highbrow than X-Factor, like a Guardian readers version??!
Whatever you do though good luck!
