In an emergency, not sure. What you really need is either Finale, or Sibelius. They are both industry standard notation software.
Otherwise, I would suggest dingbats, vector grahpics, and laying it out in Illustrator.
Do you read music? You're gonna need it.

I think Sibelius.

Another low-fi option is to record or play something into Garageband, and I think it might spit sheet music at you. Never tried, but I saw something about it.

also Logic Pro

hey all
thanks for the adviceI don't read music (well i sort of know it but it been real long). I have the score allready, but i need to make changes on the way it looks. Namely reduce the size of the bars so it can be bigger
anyways, i think i can get a copy of Sibelius since the composer im working for uses it. The thing is that these programs arent really design oriented, no shit :)

Can you get a vector copy of it and edit it in illustrator?

(Aug 22 07, 10:13)Ye I'm gona try that just now.
the thing is that its all outlines, so its gona suck to make the changes consequent over the 11 pages of the stuff.that said it'll probably suck less than having to re-type the whole thing (if I can even do that).

(Aug 22 07, 10:35)that would be brilliant, thanks
how are the layout options in finale ?
I'm going to give the illustrator technique a try first.
can we keep in touch in case I need finale ?
- harlequino0
No these programs are not intended to be design oriented, they are intended to make the engraved score clear to those who have to read it.
But they layout options are pretty intuitive, at least for Finale.
Not sure what the final use is, but be careful about being 'designy' or anything with it. Moving stufff around on the score can be dangerous when it comes to page turns, depending on the instumentation.

ok I looked into it and I have now a better definition of my problem. Which I guess is a good step towards a solution.
Basically I have now a score of 11 pages, with illustrations on the facing pages. the thing is the score turns out too small, barely readable.
so what i need to do is reduce the spacing so that the same amount of notes are on each page , but that they take up less space (horizontally). Then the page turns are safe. Then i could blow them up since they are less wide and everything would be more legible. The composer is using 'encore'

it's hard to imagine what you are talking about, can you screen shot it?
- harlequino0
when you say reduce the spacing, are you talking about specific spacing between the notes themselves?
If so, big problem. Here's why: in a score like this, notes are lined up for a reason, every beat lines up vertically. Because of the nature of the rhythms he has written, you need that much space, so the score is legible. If you start to reduce it, it's going to be hard to read.
Am I understanding correctly?
*Also, the composer needs to denote that those 3 blocks are individual staff systems. I can see that Trombone 3 and the Tuba play alone for 3 measures upon examination, but it's confusing.

ye i know im probably messing everything up good and proper when moving stuff around ...
but now i just need to see how it looks
then is it possible for the composer to set a smaller spacing, but to keep the proportions ?
then the rythm would be intactah cant they just make an alphabet like everyone else ?! :)
big thanks for helping out though
- harlequino0
I think these things may need to come from the composer. There are spacial relations that must be kept in tact for it to be readable. Good luck!
Encore is like working in MS Paint.

Haha ! shiiiit
I had the feeling those guys were dinosaurs.
I mean he makes punchcards for street organs which i think is well awesome. but sooo 18th century :)
yes the spacing should be reduced but the spacial relations kept as they should be.
I'm emailing the composer as we speak to try and sort this out...
again huge thanks for your help
- harlequino0
no prob, good luck.
It's nice letting my music degree be useful every now and then. :)
