Is this the norm now when applying for a job? Not only do you need a portfolio and esume but then squeeze in the time to do a test?

this is a way-out guess, but are you applying to Fantasy Interactive, by chance?
- version30
sounds like spec work to me

i've heard of it before. I don't quite think it's the norm, though.
i've heard of on-the-spot tests, and i've heard of overnight ones too.

No thats the thing, i guess more companies are doing this so I was just wondering...

i had to do that once. the place ended up being a joke and they used my design after i left.
if they want to make sure you can really design the way you say you can it's called a 'contract-to-hire' position where they test you out before they hire you. also, bonus points because you get to test them out as well.

i've been asked to do both (on the spot...and over night)...
... it's not uncommon.

hehe... indeed they do. :)

Im really thinking about not doing it. Its for a larger firm in LA that their name is a Color and rhymes with dead. Just kinda like you guys said spec work and my portfolio should speak for itself.

Totally just read all that shit and the thread on YH too thats what got me thinking.
- madirish0
ahhhh- cool man.
just thought of it too. :)

I make tests for people to take before they are hired...
Of course my tests are based on Biometrics and Psycho-Analysis ...
...
I have typed too much!
- k0na_an0k0
madirish, you're tests should be...
Do you know what NT and YH stand for?
[ No ]
[ Yes ]If they check "No" hire them.
- morilla0
you already passed my test pony

I would think a competent interviewer would be able to make sense of a candidate through a resume, portfolio, and a face to face.
That test is bullshit if you ask me. Way too much work....it does however highlight some things that a good portfolio should have.
I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and hope it is for up and coming designers who do not have a full portfolio. Should they possess all of these things in the portfolio there would be no need to take the test.

if a junior designer applies for a job and the portfolio looks promising but doesn't show much variety (no experience, too much free experimental stuff), i'll ask them for a small test (half day-very simple assignment). However, if their folio blows me away, i quickly give them a contract without any test.
Just think it's very usefull to see how someone takes on something simple, straightforward - especially if their folio lacks that kind of work. I will never ever use that test for real output though, that's just simple ethics. Anyway, if it's good enough to produce they'll get the job.
Call me evil, but a test has proven several times to be a good indicator of someone's potential. and ability to be hands-on. We've hired rather unexperienced people with small folios just based on a good test. We've also declined people with huge folios that started to panic on a one-page layout..

i wouldnt pass. ha.

I took a design test once and bombed it like you would not believe... and now years later I'm god's gift to graphic design.
sometimes greatness can't be revealed with testing.
