how long does it normally take for something to propogate (I have no idea if I'm spelling that correctly)?
At the moment I'm up to 72hours and still no joy. Weirdly I could see it on my work mac after 30 hours though I know they use a different internet provider (there's only 2 choices here on Jersey).

In my experience, anywhere between 24-72 hours... though I've always been careful to set these kind of jobs off early/mid-week, to avoid any weekend slackery.

actually, sack the '24' off, i don't think that's ever happened.
'48 - 72' hours would be more accurate.

you could also put a redirect on the old site to the new site (using a 'location replace' javascript thingy)

(Jul 15 07, 05:52)Maybe if my old host's server hadn't blown up I could do that...

Ok, up to 80 hours now and still no sign. Weirdly the email now works.

you tried clearing your cache and all that I hope?
Different networks update there DNS records at different intervals. But lately I've been noticing it's been extremely fast to propagate, within 24 hrs. Some people behind corp networks have taken longer, but in general, 24-72 hrs and you should be good.

Actually 'Propagation' or 'Propagate' may happen at a different rate for different users depending on the area they are in.
It has more to do with the route your actual computer uses to seek out the site. You have just made it so that route is ineffective. People who have never visited your site will/may be able to see it without problem. Your compter is looking in the wrong place. I have experienced what you are talking about where it appears right away and then 10 hours later you can't see it.
Shut down your machine, http://network-tools.com/ run a trace route and then surf to the new locale.
good luck it will appear....the other thing to do is check with the people who execute your dns instructions.
