I didn't think or say that they should be a statement of fashion. Its not about impressing anyone, its about having quality design.
I'm saying computers are part of our daily life, and like the other things we create, why can't they have quality in all aspects of their design, including elegance, aesthetics. Why would you want to ignore quality design iand craftmanship in ANY product?
Isn't our job as designers to make the world a nicer place to live in?

I'm going to start making hammers with clear plastic necks, silver powder-coat heads, white translucent polymer grips, and embedded LCD lights.

you never know you might just be on to something there......

i'd love to redesign black&decker tools. i think it has a lot of potential to make them look really fucking cool.
- GT_10
I think you're a fuckin weirdo queer for caring about that sort of shit, tkmeister.

ya know gt-1 it's easy to sit behind your comp and play design christ.
why do you have dik as your website? I bet if you actually showed the rest of us what you have to offer, you wouldn't have a leg to stand on.
I also bet you never will...
- ribit0
you know there's a team of product designers being paid every day to care about making black&decker tools look (and be) really fucking cool... It's not a weird thing.
- tkmeister0
i am a weirdo.
- ribit0
sure but he actually said you were a 'fuckin weirdo queer'
- joyride0
design is part of every products development cycle... at least it should be, engineers make crappy products
- tkmeister0
oh well, there's no point getting pissed off and angry at an idiot. he obviously doesn't get what design means.
let's move on.

computers will NEVER be a statement of fashion, no matter how hard you geeks want them to be. Ever. Sorry, but you're a geek for even thinking like that.

(Jul 8 07, 16:13)what?? that is the most bizarre statement you could make...
of course they are...
when the iPods came out and suddely it was way cool to have white earphones coming off your shirt collar to let everyone know u had one. the way that designery types sport their macbooks and mac bookpro's in coffee shops and look around to see if anyone is gawping.....
the fact u can but skins for you laptops, ipods etc. to go with ur clothing.. it all reinforces the fact that pcs ARE a statement of fashion..dont get me wrong... the fact that they CAN be seen as a statement of fashion .. is whats gay in the first place

strange, i thought caring about the way things look was part of being a designer. not only the things you create, but the things around you - is that a crime? because you're acting like it is. i have no idea why you're getting so worked up and whiny over this. i never even mentioned anything about Mac's function - which actually works pretty damn well. so now i have function AND form, where's the loss?
and with your philosophy gt, EVERYTHING is a tool. right? cars are just transportation, your clothes are just to cover your body, and your girlfriend is just for having sex... right? how boring. i want all that shit to look nice, especially something i have to spend hours staring at every day.
That hammer analogy was truly dumb. a hammer is something you keep in a drawer in your garage, it's not displayed in your house, around your furniture and a part of your everyday surroundings.
it seems like all the PC fans are always complaining about how expensive macs are and use that as an argument. well, that shouldn't even be a factor. if someone wants to spend the money that they earned themselves on something, they should be able to. it's their prerogative. don't hate on others just because you're cheap.
and what are YOU in this business for? how can you even call yourself a designer if you don't even appreciate good design and criticize others who do. i'm not saying you have to like Mac design - but anything.

I only have pcs in my house and at my internship....
However, I work at apple, and use macs at school...I must say that macs are 100 X better than pcs, they last longer, and have a better resale value.
They do, however, require an ultra high upfront cost; if I weren't such a poor college student I would tottally buy one..
in terms of design they look awsome, but you can get a nice looking pc too; for instance sony and toshiba make nice looking units--however the tech support for those companies is a hassle. There are no company owned stores where you can take your computer to get repaired. You either ship it off to some random place, or have to go to some dork who works out of his mothers basement to come over and fix it for you in between back to back episodes of star trek the next generation reruns.
- Antonelli0
the high upfront cost is worth it (at least for me anyway) when you consider all the anti-virus crap you have to buy for your PC and overall lost time & money with maintenance and shit crashing/freezing up.
- DUKIE08220
agreed...but I don't have that stuff on my pc, and I never have a problem
knock on wood
