I don't work in London; however I presume that 40k wouldn't get your far; however would be a nice start. though... it's all relevant to housing costs etc I think.

That's nice.

Like I said; don't live in London and haven't done the research but it all seems expensive... what's the comparion to NY? Anyone know?

£40k ($80k) is livable in london.
You won't be able to buy a house with it but you will be able to afford a comfortable, small, flat on the outskirts, (outside of soho, mayfair etc).
You will have something left over each month for wining and dining but you won't be eating at claridges each week.
try and get something near work to save a stupid amount on travel costs and get a bike, even a small motorbike but make sure it's well secure.and of course, if you are bored, look for something to do here:

40k in London is still above the average London salary. How long is a piece of string? of course you can live in London on 40k. If you wann get a nosh down Stringfellows everynight though better retrain as a banker or brush up on your footy skills.

a length of string is 26k long

bugger...maybe you can't live on 40k then.

a trumpet?
£20-25k when you first get here and you're kicking. When you've been here a while you start getting used to fresh deli food, buying clothes more than biannually, taxiing everywhere, ordering Hoegaarden or mixers by default, then you need that extra 10k.
More than £35k and you should be looking to move back out into the country, to fuck and spawn more consumers who'll come back in their working years and perpetuate the misery.

Good to be back then, Nairn?

i wept for joy when i stepped out onto the asphalt at Stanstead.

Any tales to tell, or was your trip purely for quiescent purposes?

Nothing of note to anyone outside my little clique of gnomic & fantastical Basques - lots of food, lots of drinking, lots of piss-taking (a good few new nicknames were made up) nothing cultural (didn't even get as far as Bilbao, just stayed around the outskirts). Just honest, clean fun. With a little 'phet and pot in for good measure.
Wedding was... idyllic. truly. Almost like something out of a movie. Strange seeing friends become... beautiful, real people.
I utterly love that place - think I might try and buy a cottage in the mountains there one day.

How quaint. You could set up your laser cutting/engraving company there. Overheads would be low, labour would be cheap and transport/export links would be convenient...
Sorry, think I was just posessed by Kevin Mcloud or something.
