The hard part is the mental battle. Read Allen Carrs book. I did and found quitting easy after 7 years. All of my friends that have read his book have quit and stayed off the fags too. They havents smoked since either.

good luck quitting. it's hard, I am trying to but stress got the better of me.

When i wanted to quit, i decided to play with myself in a little game. I made it so that in my mind it appeared like i'm only quitting for one day, not forever. And then the next day i did the same. And so on...
The hardest part was to avoid your smoking patterns - with a first coup of coffee, while driving, after a meal... etc. It was also very hard for me not to smoke while working. So i fooled myself into doing tiny bits of work before lighting a cigarette.
And so on...

hold on for 48 hours. This is the amount of time needed for nicotine to leave your blood and for your buddy to take out all the chemicals.
Then, buy several bags of lollipops. If you work on a computer, every time you want to light up a smoke, you start sucking on a lollipop. With most people, eating sugar or sweet stuff make the urge for smokes go away. Also, always keep a bottle of water with you. When you want to light up a smoke, you can drink a bottle of water (this is also good cause as you'll increase the daily water intake we all pretty much lack).
This worked for me. I haven't been smoking for several months now and I quit cold turkey.

shit made some typos:
buddy = body
also, don't forget after those initial 48 hours, your cravings after cigarettes are exclusively psychological.

yeah and don't forget that once its gone away from your body there will come a time when you are so convinced you've completely kicked it that you'll go "you know what, I'm so proud of myself now I could have a ciggie just cos I LIKE it, yeah why not, its not the boss of me"
Then you'll be back on 20 a day within a week. It doesn't go away it just retreats and gets ready to hit you in a new way. Beware.

I quit cold turkey as well beginning of this year. boz you're right on all counts, works for me. I did gain some weight, but I started running once a week which really makes me feel good. still, there's no substitute that can compare to smoking, there's simply nothing that can replace that feeling, which sucks. also, I found the mental effects of quitting a lot more troublesome than the physical. it seems all feelings are hitting you much more directly, and it feels like my mental state is much more instable compared to when I was still smoking. but, it does get easier after a couple months.

smoke more pot!, i haven't smoked a precious camel in over a year, the craving doesn't go away.

I apparently was not addicted because it has been a breeze quitting.
My friends smoke in front of me all the time, and I rarely if ever have a craving for a cigarette.
Unfortunately, Pittsburgh did away with their smoking ban ... which was one of my reasons since I saw the writing on the wall awhile ago.
Ugh.

Grab a stick of gum and your bike/running shoes/soccer ball/basketball/etc. and get some exercise! Get out of the house. Take a day off of work and go for a hike or a camping trip.

there is no quitting my friend.

i quit smoking just over a year ago.
it was as easy as pie, even 'er indoors managed and she smoked more than me.
the trick is to smoke your last few ciggies fast so they make you feel sick and from then on keep yourself busy.
we haven't looked back since.
