all sorts of train info on this site.
http://www.seat61.com/index.html…
If there isn't the direct route on the site he'll have links to where you can find the info.
myself and the g/f have severly curtailed our flying and this site is always our first stop when planning holidays....
just to warn you the RailEurope site is a nightmare..

dunno if anyone posted this before, but fly ryan air to eindhoven, it's about 2 and a half hours by train from eindhoven to schiphol

the lake district is definitely a must if you are near milano. cinque terre is beautiful, i suggest taking a ferry from la spezia to one of the 5 towns, you get to see the towns from the water and that view is equally as good as seeing it from the train or hiking through the trails.

thanks lowimpact and tadcautious!
excellent tip tad about the ferry. i will def. have to do that!
seriously, i always have faith in this site:) you have al helped a ton! thank you!
- lvl_130
hey tadcautious! do you happen to have a link to the ferry you described that rolled past the cinque terre? i try to do a bit of research on it, but came up a bit blank (ie. mostly links and info in italian..which i don't speak :\
any help would be great. many thanks :)
- lvl_130
and by a bit blank i really mean that there was too much info that i found on ferry travel. if you could narrow it down a bit to the cinque terre line that has online info.
thanks...again :)

There are no direct flights from Rome to Amsterdam? I find that a little odd. How about Rome to Paris? Then Paris to Dam? Or how about an overnight coach or something? Have tried Expedia or BA.com? Other airlines ?

What time are you leaving Rome?
I'm driving up from southern France in a couple of weeks - if you can make it a bit further north (like Milano or something), I could give you a ride up there, if the dates are sync'd and you don't carry too many bags :)
- Nairn0
Bloody hell, KLM are charging €818 per person between Rome & Schipol! Christ!
- Nairn0
In the Defender? Can I fly across and tag along too? :)
- jox0
Hahah, no way - I'll give you €818 if you can take 2 hours of highway in that thing without wanting to kill yourself.
- Nairn0
lol.. I dunno, i always used to like the dull droaning of ill-matched tires on asphalt, brain-wrenching gear changes and freezing jetstreams of air shooting through hidden little holes (despite going no more than 40mph :)
God i want one.

let me check my shit from last summer when i went, i'll get back to you.
- lvl_130
that's mighty kind of you jox! sincerely, thanks for the offer!
and thanks other for the tips. that was mighty fast!
with that said...we just got of fthe phone with klm. we ended up just changing our outbound flight from amsterdam to milan. it was $200 a person :/ but i think it will save us on overall travel time and the headache of trying to get all the fuck way back up to amsterdam.
so i think we will stick somewhat to our plan, but we may just eliminate rome. i've heard mixed things about milan (that's why it wasn't on our original aggenda) but does anyone have any ideas or places to see?
thanks again guys!

If you can get to Prague it's stunning. Seriously. I spent 3 years there as a kid 1977-80. My dad worked for the British Embassy out there. Went back a few years ago when I was old enough to appreciate it.
Cheap beer too.
Some of my photos from my nineties trip there on Flickr
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jer…And Paris is a must. Equally beautiful, but a damn sight more expensive to eat and drink. Some flickr shots of mine there too.
