Kerning

This is a good question. I figured it deserved it's own thread
___________Here's a question for you about kerning, Typographica:
If a font has bad/insufficient kerning programmed into it, and I use Optical kerning, is that good enough or is the Optical kerning option just rubbish?
When working with thoughtfully drawn and kerned typefaces, I use the default "Metrics" setting (i.e. Adobe Garamond pro, Thesis, Fedra, Gotham, etc...), although occasionally I use the optical option – fore example, I'm using Helvetica Neue UltraLight for headlines in a book at the moment, and they seem to look better with optical kerning.
Your thoughts?
thx.

jeez, you could have at least posted the reply, tut tut

Most fonts are kerned for text (looser) setting, so CS's impressive Optical Spacing can definitely improve headlines. Just keep in mind that there isn't yet a machine that can beat a trained eye (for instance, Optical avoids touching pairs, which are sometimes desired). So you may need to make manual adjustments.

Sweet! :D
totally forgot about the other thread. It's not like there's a shortage of "What the Font" threads etc. etc.
Cheers Typo :)
