I have no use for either of these lenses, more of a want
1. canon 50mm prime
2. canon 70mm-300mm telephotoall i have now is the standard 18mm-55mm that came with my rebel
any opinions?

70-300mm if you wanna do some wildlife.
50mm if you want to do more portrait.
i would personally go for 50mm but that's because i have a 18-200mm zoom already.

my photo buddies say prime for the portraits everyone else says 300mm for the "stalker in us all" i just can't decide what i will be more in to. though as summer creeps wanting to see far away may not be a bad thing but then again taking a pretty portrait of who you stalk might pan out well too.
i'm contemplating both so they can stay in the bag. thinking the more expensive first to get it out of the way.
man decisions suck, i need a client to make the wrong for me so i know what to do :D

Get the 50mm and you will realize how low quality 18-55 is. You will rediscover photography again with low aperture shots. Paired with high iso it will allow for some low light flashless action. Fun fun fun!
As far as I remember, it's dirt cheap too.

i have a 18-200 and LOVE it, you can still take portraits too...

50mm ordered
i hope you're right raf, you said what i've been hearing a lot of. those first few pics will tell the story i hope.

Neu, i think i'll order the telephoto in the next week or so once i bore myself with portraits
my mom, the pentax master, suggested i learn to take a picture up close before trying far away
family is always so humbling

omg! those posters are so her when she's in camera mode
usually she doesn't care, put an slr of any kind in front of her and the jabber begins
the part about unused space in the camera bag is spot on too
:)

..and they don't even have pentaxian.com to support the capaign.. that's so pentax!
At least they quit giving the cameras unsellable and un web-searchable names, like *istDS
- version30
looks like they got the idea from a pentax user calling themselves pentaxian. figured maybe some free stuff for the guy holding the domain, you make a damn good point raf

So jealous, my car was broken into and my camera was stolen. Miss it so much and can't afford to replace it. I miss taking pictures regardless of the lens.

It sucks since I just installed CS2 at home and got a nice scannner for my negatives, now I have to start over.
