Are they a waste of time or do you think it's better to approach design studio's themselves when searching for a design job?
- Concrete0
I have found them to be a waste of time. Depending on the studio they prefer to recruit without agencies cos it's cheaper.

Some are rubbish, some are reasonable. It's a pretty big market with recruiters at all ends of the scale.
A lot of studio's tend to prefer a direct approach though (well, so I've seen on a lot of sites when looking for jobs), possibly because recruiters by and large are bullshitters who send unsuitable candidates but also because they save money employing staff direct.
If you ignore the horror of the site, I had a good experience with these guys http://www.glossrecruitment.com/…
Didn't get the job in the end (got to the last 2 people and missed out) but I did get a sense that the guy I dealt with knew what he was talking about in terms of the industry instead of chucking around buzzwords.

I went to one and was totally turned on by the sexy lady who I spoke to who said my work was wonderful and I should be earning hoards of more money than I was already.
unfortunately, I had more luck on my own at the time, but they do sometimes work though. Honest!

I think most are useless. I've had more success by contacting the studios and keeping my eye on design mag articles and contributors as targets to write/email to.
Agencies are pissing me off right now, they take soooo long to get back to you.
Direct introductions, done properly, work just as well.

They're like other agents and I don't think they do enough to justify their comission, so most smaller agencies are loathe to use them. Generally speaking they would much prefer not to use one..I mean, who woldn't
Thats a pretty harsh critique of their services as they're just a glorified 'collector' of CV's

Yeah, he's a cunt

Represent seem to only employ you if you went to St Martins & did a 6 month internship with Browns.
I hate the elitism.
- Bottlerocket0
Don't use them.
Get off your arse and show some iitiative, as you would your actuyal design work, and get your CV under the noses of people that matter.

they bent over backwards for me, but then again, you're not me...

(Dec 12 06, 05:14)that's only because you bent over forwards for them, snuggs, admit it...
- mr_snuggles0
I did noting of the sort...

Represent don't cover Manchester anyway. Seems alot of creative recruitment agencies are all London based.

What Concrete said does feel like the truth.
Represent are a nice bunch though.I think youre better off going it alone. Most of the jobs through recuritment agencies are for big companies where there might be little room for real creativity. Lots of in house jobs and the like going.
Just get on the blower

Major Players are good, I was a junior at the time, they gave me an hour long interview even when there wasn't much available at the time. They also stay in touch even though I decieded to go freelance for the winter.
Agencies do take a while to get back to you but if you like moving around a lot of enjoy freelance it's good because they stay in-touch and often offer new areas of work for you after 18months, variety is the spice of life!
