Some are rubbish, some are reasonable. It's a pretty big market with recruiters at all ends of the scale.
A lot of studio's tend to prefer a direct approach though (well, so I've seen on a lot of sites when looking for jobs), possibly because recruiters by and large are bullshitters who send unsuitable candidates but also because they save money employing staff direct.

Didn't get the job in the end (got to the last 2 people and missed out) but I did get a sense that the guy I dealt with knew what he was talking about in terms of the industry instead of chucking around buzzwords.
