Where do you start if you are tasked to name a company?
I have written down all the words associated with the trade, looked up Latin translations, used the partners names, but they aren't happy with anything yet.
how would you go about it
Thanks

ask them to relay the story of how the company started .. what they were thinking

I know how they started: one had money the other had expertise. They met through a mutual friend

mutual spend?

experimental your favourite/cool words together...

what kind of company are you setting up?

Ok they are a property development company targeting the top of the market. They don't want an airey fairy name but their surnames (the popular route for people in this trade) do not have a good ring about them. plus one of their names is pronounced very differently to what it looks, therefore adding confusion.
I suppose I'm clutching at straws hoping to find some inspiration.

MMF - Mutual Money Friend ...
Of course, officially, MMF would have to stand for something much more "businesslike"

personally I have always thought
Gutter snipes has a certain ring to it.

I've been given this task before and followed the same process you have already. It isn't easy but if you come across something that you think is strong but the client is unsure you might have to sell the idea.
Try to look for companies doing something similar for a reference.
Also take a break, don't try to trash out loads of ideas at once it saps your soul.
Keep us posted, Dancer.

How about;
The Rent Boys.
Tolette...... that's it for me.

might help, but I dare say you've already got this kicking about (I found this on here after all)

condita, basis, radix, solum
are all latin words associated with the word 'foundation'
is that too obvious or cheesy?

Hardest. Thing. Ever.
I was always 'good' at English and moderately creative otherwise, but I'm fucking awful at choosing company names - my only piece of advice - 'make sure it's easily spellable, especially over a phone'.
Obvious, I know - but there's nothing more soul destroying than having to spell out your company name 5 - 10 times a day. So try and avoid human names and anything phonetically fuzzy.
Don't forget - you've always got the branding and design to jazz up the identity in support!
If in doubt - do the old web 0.5 thing and merge a tertiary colour name with an endangered animal - that fashion's surely due a return?
(ps. Dancer, My old man liked your site - I may have to copy yours... :)

speaking of phonetically fuzzy .. just name it after his wife's box
how could he refuse?
- kelpie0

beige dolphin
greengrey girraffe
puce timberwolf
- kelpie0
