I've been sending applications for two months now with only one interview so far. The company I'm with doessn't do many sexy projects so it's hard to show my abilities.
Anyone have any ideas of what I can do to be more appealing to hirees—or do i just suck?

Try and do some art / design projects freelance and build a more diverse portfolio

what does sending applications mean?
are you calling/following up? are you cold calling? are you sending out resumes? are you going to portfolio reviews? have you joined all the right job and community boards? are you meeting people in the biz? are you really doing everything you can to find a new job?

I am going to be as honest and nice as possible to help you out.
Your work seems like you are a webdesigner that started out coding then went into design.
Your work lacks todays needed style and quality and is a bit dated. It is very boxed in and has a bit of a harshness to it. I think you would most likely get a job at a software company that needs a web designer rather than a design shop that needs a person to design websites.
You are not the worst person I have seen at all. Maybe in the middle. It seems like your work is sorta like a Graduates portfolio, and then once getting out of college, you didnt progress as much in yoru design style. Take a look at some of the stuff people are doing. www.thefwa.comwww.onepageportfolios.com
Clients are expecting very high end and high quality stuff these days. Your stuff is a bit dated, lacks good typography, and is a bit rough around the edges.
I would really look at the great sites out there and try and step up your game.
Also it would be good to lose that countdown/intro on your site, no need for it and makes me want to close your site before viewing your portfolio.

Reduce your frame of reference. Too many scroll bars.

have some more confidence in yourself son!
you do not suck. but your portfolio is def. a bit on the corporate side...err something like that. i guess some pertinent questions are: where are you sending your resume? who are you hoping to work for? give us some more info, and maybe we can help you out (or not. i mean this is newstoday for fucks sake! : )

I think you've got some very nice print work, and I can see the talent. However, your web work doesn't show the same flair.
Try making a good first impression by featuring some of those pieces on the homepage(which is completely empty. read: no no) and trimming back the web to your top 3 or 4.
I'd also ditch the countdown, or at least change out the font on the numerals. straight into content is probably the way to go

stick it out and be patient, your time will come. in the meantime, do more persoal work which best shows off your abilities – do projects for the hell of it but don't call it 'PERSONAL' work, think of something else to entice people to that part of your site.

I think you need to decide what kind of job you want.If your url landed on my desk, i woudln't have any idea what kind of work you ultimatly wanted to do and because of that it would get sidelined. Are you a print designer or web designer, depending on the agency you can't be both.. Also think what type of place you'd like to work and tailor your approach to that. Specifics on your site, lose the countdown, by the time it got to 0 i've almost decided to go elsewhere, the text in your nav needs to be made bigger and more prominant. enjoy

I couldn't even be bothered to wait to get past the loading bit...so yes, you suck...
- vespa0
you don't suck!
but the countdown should go.
your print work IS stronger than your online stuff, when you are doing your next project you should approach the layout and typography the way you would a print job and see what happens.
the lack of interviews might be to do with your approach. how you are targeting companies, follow-up etc. do you phone them? write to them? tell them why you want to work for them? are you confident? sorry if this seems patronising.
most importantly don't give up! turn this downtime around and design something amazing for your own creative enjoyment.
