Where can I find a decent Mac hard drive for not so much money? I'd rather not deal with eBay and craigslist doesn't have too much. Anyone know of any special deals going on anywhere? Ideally I'd like one 40GB - 100GB and don't want to spend much more than $50.

seriously though.. don't risk your work and chince on a drive. start saving some coin for a decent FW drive, and backup data to DVD in the meantime.

Won't work for me. My PB doesn't have a DVD burner, just a reader. Just got rid of my iMac that had a DVD burner.

Can't you just buy an internal HD and then buy a USB 2.0 external enclosure for it? That should work with a mac right? You can do it for under $100 easy.

do what nocomply said. that's what i do. cheap and MORE reliable.

More reliable? How come?
And as far as USB goes...is Firewire a lot quicker or is USB not too bad? Once I get it I'll have about 25GB to move.

USB 2.0 and firewire should be about the same in speed. If you bought your mac within the last 2 years it is definitely USB 2.0 equipped.
I don't really think going that route is necessarily more reliable than getting a premade external HD, but it is cheaper. Also if the HD dies you still got the case to put a new one in.

"More reliable"
From what I have seen, external drives seem to falter much more easily than the technology of internal hds. maxor, lacey, and others, seem to break before a western digital or kensington in an enclosure. i did a basic google search for: http://www.google.com/search?num…
but i was unable to get concrete evidence. good luck.

If anyone is in LA, how is Fry's on pricing for hard drives?
- lvl_130
it's fry's man! you can't even find hard drives in that fucking mess of a store!
if i had to guess i'd say it's in one of the about 400 shopping carts stacked full of shit all over the showroom!
: )

I rarely go there, but I hear they have decent prices. But if I can't find it in the aisles of aisles under the giant mushrooms and oversized chairs, then I guess it ain't worth the drive.
Found an 80GB Maxtor on craigslist, "used a few times" for $40. Might not be bad...
