sad loss, a guy with more passion than most.
I thought stingrays were placid creatures...?
ahh right thanks wiki
'Dasyatids do not attack aggressively, or even actively defend themselves. When threatened their primary reaction is to swim away. However, when they are attacked by predators or stepped on, the barbed stinger in their tail is mechanically whipped up, usually into the offending foot; it is also possible, although less likely, to be stung "accidentally" by brushing against the stinger. Contact with the stinger causes local trauma (from the cut itself), pain and swelling from the venom, and possible infection from parts of the stinger left in the wound, as well as from seawater entering the wound. It is possible for ray stings to be fatal if they sever major arteries in the chest or pelvic regions, or if the wounds are improperly treated. Their stingers are normally ineffective against their main predator, sharks.'

its a shame, but as someone said...live by the sword....
I've been diving off Port Douglas, and there is no fucking way on earth Id dive without full body armour.
I've also stood on a stingray and the barb went straight through the side of my foot. Dangerous little fuckers.

That is really sad news.
I can imagine him being pulled back into the boat though and enthusiastically describing just how one dies by stingray.

It's sad that the animals finally caught up with him and he died filming a documentary.
Unlike the idot guy in GrizzlyMan, he didn't believe he was above the animals and in control of them, he always respected them. Too bad he wasn't quite careful enough. His wife's pretty crazy too though. I hope for their kids' sake she calms down a bit, they need at least one parent.

only 1 of 3 people to die from stingrays over here in recorded history apparently, unlucky.
At least he went out with his boots on.

"Let me just flip over this beauuutiful little critta - now, if I just stick my thumb up it's ars... aagh!.. gurggle... splutter..."

he must have swum or rather hovered really really close above the stingray to actually be hit in the chest; about the only fatal location to be stung..

that's a pretty cowboy way to go out, though. i'm sure he would have appreciated that.

Sad, sad shame. He was such a passionate man who really put himself out there. He truly was one with nature.
I've got to say, though, better he died doing something he was meant to do. I'm glad (not really glad, but, you know, solaced) to hear he wasn't killed in a car accident or fell down a manhole or something.
RIP mate.
=(
