For my 1 year anniversary I'm going to buy my wife, whos been wanting to get back into photography, a new, nice digital camera.
I have no idea about what brands/models are worth their money right now and I'm looking for some advice from the people who would know.
Can you please give me some tips on what to buy and not to buy in the $1000 or less range.
I want it to be a digital slr camera. Thanks!

EOS 30D from Canon is the best digital SLR you under $1000.00.

Canon is coming out with new DSLR's...Theyll be announcing them August 24...wait a bit.

My pentax K100D arrived today, can't wait to get back home!
Nikon, Pentax and Minolta (Sony) (Olympus as well I think) use the same Sony CCD sensor, so they offer more or less the same image quality. Canon image quality might differ with its CMOS sensor.
Pentax and Sony(minolta) have the image stabilizer now.I chose Pentax because it's very small, very capable and uses all Pentax mount lenses down to the 70's. It even measures light and signals focus with those 30 years old russian manual ones!
I sold the *istDS yesterday, it was a tad slow and lacked the stabilizer. K100D is just what I needed.
$1K will buy it with a veery nice lens.. (or two)

the new Nikon d80 might be a good choice as well

I was kinda waiting for Rand to join the thread with his Nikon :)

although if canon is coming out with new models it might be good to wait and see

in any case, it's either canon or nikon.

Canon S3IS. Great camera for the money. Furthermore, you can get quality attachments (telephoto, wide angle, and filters) in addition to the camera that will cost less and is suprisizing comprable in quality to more expensive canons. It is a 6 mp camera.
I have the S2 and would upgrade if it didn't cost 500. Great friggin camera, both the S2 and the S3.
Can't recommend enough!

canon invented digital photography... they have been leaps and bounds ahead of all others. nikon borrows its technolgy from sony, which is based on a video camera ccd sensor. canon uses a cmos sensor and digiII processors made for still imaging. which kinda makes them the front runners.
i have a 20D and it kicks. i'd go 30D for wifey. the lens it comes with licks so i'd recommend a simple 50mm 1.8. i personally hate zooms so i use all fixed lenses except for one 20-35 usm.
i'm not trying to hate on anyone that loves their other brand rigs. pros that shoot nikon, likely shot nikon before the digital revolution. having lenses and shit, it makes sense to stay with nikon. i've shot canon since 87, and have had lenses for canon for awhile. my main camera during the film years was a hassleblad, and i held out forever to get a digital slr. i did all the research and would have even switched brands if i felt it was a better rig.
anyways. canon is my vote. 20d, 30d or rebel xt even if she wants a good toy.
good luck.

is the N70/N80 that much better than the N50? I know you get what you pay for, just wondering how the quality levels off (like the jump from p and s cameras to slrs is big, but how big from one dSLR to the next one up?)

i bought the sony alpha 100

I don't know about August 24, Photokina 2006 starts September 23 in Cologne and that's when most premieres can be expected.

My work just bought a Canon 350D and I'm a little disappointed with picture quality.

Did it come with the 18-55 kit lens? Canon's pic quality is the best of the bunch (due to cmos sensor), but the18-55 and 17-85 IS are not known to be award-winning lenses. Actually, their quite weak (especially given 17-85's price)
