QUESTION: how long does it take to ship something within Canada in terms of ordering something from Dell?
- khilled0
you pay for what you get with shipping anywhere but if it's customized there's a factory build time on top of the shipping time...my other acer died on me too, had a shaded stripe down one side then it just went nuts and would barely start

I'm getting all the default programs and systems within the Dell, so it doesn't have to be customized.

I think I would stay away from HP. My gf's laptop is an HP and the HD died about a month after she got it and we had to have it replaced. Then she had an issue with a row of pixels on the LCD turning completely green and had to ship it back for repairs. Luckily she had a warranty. My roommate also had an HP which just mysteriously died one day. Only 2 examples, but enought to make me skeptical.
I'm thinking about getting a laptop soon, and I am going with dell. I also plan on spending the extra couple hundred for a good warranty cuz i hear their support is pretty decent.

my only concerns with your set up is the small screen, 14' is nothing compared to the 17' from satellite. and the fact that I have never had any problems with my toshiba since day 1 and I have heard some bad reviews about dell.

Oh and as far as the specs go, you may want to see how much it will be for 2 gigs of RAM instead of 1. Depends on how long you plan on keeping the machine, but it will come in handy now and especially when new versions of PS, dreamweaver, etc.. come out.

thanks for the suggestions. I think I'm okay with the screen size since it never was a big deal for me before. I watch films and everything, but I never put the films to full-size because I watch them by myself, and therefore the screen would be too big if it was full-screen (since the laptop just sits on my lap). I'm also glad the Dell is lightweight, since I will need to bring it around to school with me every once in a while. It's a bit thicker than the Toshiba though.
As for the RAM, my previous computer only had like 512MB, so I'm quite alright with the 1GB. My work computer only has 256, which sucks but I'm not the type to complain about it. In fact, it didn't bother me too much until other co-workers told me about it and suggested that I ask the company to get me a better computer, since I'm the designer and everything.

Actually, I just checked, and the Toshiba one I was interested in has a screen size of 15.4"

I see, I didnt know you just wanted it for school. then you should be ok. I was thinking you needed the computer to design and in my case a screen is a big issue.

It's for both, but in September I'll be focusing on school, not design. I suspect that I won't be designing anything major on it.

(most) laptops suck period if you go economical definitly get a good exchange type of warrenty, the one that'll get you a new one even if you put your foot through it sort of thing

as for my previously mentioned brightness problem, i just lowered my gamma and things are just fine. but i do have a suped up graphics card instead of the intel-based one (which sux).

Alright, I called the Dell people and they said that I wouldn't receive my system for two weeks. So I'm going with the Toshiba instead. I have school, so I can't really wait around. I also have to re-install everything and get the files in my previous harddrive transferred into the Toshiba one.
I'm quite happy with my machine right now. Very shiny and widescreen :)
