So...I think I'm going with this one instead of Toshiba:
http://configure.dell.com/dellst…Any stories about experiences with Dell are welcome. I read some of the other threads about home customer support versus business customer support too.
Thanks :)

all of ours in the studio have had problems with overheating and battery replacements, but support were good enough to replace them (business support) - i hear the toshiba ones are pretty reliable tho

Jaline, I rock a Dell Inspiron laptop and have had no problems.
At my work we pretty much use Dell everything, and my old desktop (well still kind of new, heh) had some problems with overheating but they replaced the harddrive and gave me an updated fan overnite (business support).
The laptop I got though never overheats, though at times I feel as if it is going to (usually if I forget to put it in stand-by then throw it in my bag).
The one thing I've noticed that it takes longer and longer to boot up for some reason. :X

we are also nearly 100% dell here too (workstations etc)

I have had an inspiron for like 2 years. My display died after about 9 months. Still under warranty, I had it back in 3 days. No problems since. I really need to reload the OS soon, because mine is getting slower and slower. If I sign this big contract within the next few weeks I am going to buy a new laptop and desktop and give the old ones to my mom and uncle, respectively.

The dell flat panel monitors are hella cheap right now, even the big 'un.

Well. it's very similar to mine
apart from graphic card and HD
The HD is 5400 or 7200 rpm? (i got the 7200-60 Gb, it rocks) And i'd take a radeon/nvida graphic card, not the intel, but it's just me.Anyway, buy the full 3-year customer care. Don't save that money or youll' be crying.
My exp with Dell:
Shipping ok
After 3 monts the DVD was gone (maybe my fault, but called them, few tests and 2 days later mr. Dell came and replaced the component). Also the Display (the retro lamp precisely) and the video card gone (not at the same time). But same as above: call, test and after 2 days replacement.
At the end: i spent 280 in the customer care; them, at least, 350 :-)
The guys who did support are experienced professionals.

even the indian call centers arent that bad. I was on the phone with them when the display died and they were cool and super helpful. I like dell.

Mine survived a beer spillage a few months back so no complaints...

Good choice. It's really hard to beat the price for the hardware you're getting.
I use an Inspiron 6400/E1505 Duo Core for some pretty heavy music production and recording. It performs almost flawlessly.
Good luck.

Don't get an american Toshiba.
I got one and had to send it for repair 8 times. Got everything replaced, motherboard (twice), cd drive (5 times), screan (once), speakers, and sadly the list goes on and on and on...
The fuckers refused to give me a new one and had to talk endlessly with dudes in Turkey and India and a few times with people in their main office in irving Ca.
Ended up with a piece of shit that does not work well. The cd drive has not worked in 8 months. The waranty expired so I'm fucked. And all I could do is file complaints with the BBS in new york, new jersey, and cali.
Laptop = crap
Customer Service = crap
Indian guy's english accent = crap

wat about HP?
- jaylarson0
"wat about HP?" nope.
as for dell. i am currently typing on my inspiron 6000. i only have one problem, the screen is a little too over exposed. modern dell laptops have this fancy coating, resembling glass, that makes the color more accurate.
and they don't seem to catch fire too much any more...

get a Toshiba. I love mine. Everyone that i had spoke to before gettin mine had issues with their dell laptops.
Toshiba Satellite 1.8 ghz's -80GB HD were at $799 CDN a short while ago.
- khilled0
so what about HP?
- Jaline0
I'm looking for something under $899 (before tax), so I think I'm getting a good deal for my price.

Also, it's really hard to choose. I keep getting both great and bad reviews for Toshiba, whereas most of the people I've talked to about Dell don't have any immediate problems with it. But that's mainly because there are more reviews out there for the specific model I'm interested in compared to the specific Satellite model I was interested in.

i have an acer
- Jaline0
I had an Acer, and then it totally got destroyed (I still have no clue how) after 1.5 years, which sucks. No one has been able to help me either, so I'm staying away from that brand for a while.
- Jaline0
by destroyed, I mean that the monitor turned off one day and wouldn't turn back on, and apparently everything except for the hard drive was salvageable.

*unsalvageable
