since some fucker stole my bike i've been looking at several on craigslist and can't really decide if i should purchase one or just go to the local bike shop and get a new one. i don't want to spend that much money (in case it someone decides to steal this one too) but i'm not really sure what to get...
i had a trek 4500 and it was solid. haven't found anything like it used but saw this: http://minneapolis.craigslist.or…
anybody have any opinions on it? worth the price even if it is 8 years old? i really dont want to spend more than $400.
any help would be great! or any suggestions would be even better! i'm in minneapolis in case any of you stumble across some great find for me : )
thanks!

If it's just for around town buy an old road bike and make it a single speed or a fixed gear.
Total price $100-250.

describe the sort of riding you do
- lvl_130
around town mostly, but i like to take it to trails as well.
would like to stick to a mountain bike style. i've ridden single speed and i pop way too many tires and bend way too many rims.
- acescence0
single speed doesn't necessarily mean it's got road rims/tires.
you could go with an old rigid mountain bike frame, put slightly more narrow tires on it and a fixed/freewheel flip flop hub so you can ride fixed on the street and flip it for freewheel on trails. a pair of brakes and you're good.

nice! except i have no idea what you just said! : )
i only ride bikes i dont build them : )
more description for a dumbass?

you need 2 bikes.
buy a cheap, old but quality bike for the city and save your pennies for a quality trail bike.
- lvl_130
yeah, true horton. but i have no space for two bikes. i just want one solid bike that will get me around but will also let me trail ride. no ned for speed, but the lighter the better.
- horton0
oh no, just saw that Marin..
please don't buy a full suspensioin bike with bar ends, mounted water bottle and reflectors.
don't get suckered into rear suspension unless its quality.
anything less will just be a drag to ride.

.. if you want a bike that you can ride on trails and the city for under $1000, you should really just be looking at hardtails.
these are mostly canadian listings but should give you an idea for quality gear and used prices:

$400 spent much better (imho):
- lvl_130
yeah...that is what i really am looking for! that specialized is dope but not too over the top.
not sure what a hardtail is but i'm ...well no i'm really not sure haha! i'm assuming it has something to do with the low back end of the frame? maybe...
- horton0
hardtail just means a mtbike with no rear-suspension.
unless you're paying lots of $$$ for a frame with quality rear-suspension, it'll just be mush, slow you down and be a drag. for $400 don't even consider it.
