Ok. Where I work we used to use a Nikon D70. We can't use it anymore (long story), so we are going to buy a replacement camera for ourselves.
What would be a good alternative to the D70?
Would it be as simple as getting the D200?
Your advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

can i have the D70?

ok, pay attention.
2 companies our building. the other company used to be our parent company. we changed name and split to be independent, taking all hardware etc with us. there company secretary had his arse in his hand one day and decided that the camera was theirs and not ours. they took it back.
Not really that long a story eh?!

wow, here i was expecting a story about alien abductions and the like..
oh well
why not just get another one the same?

D200 is a great camera. If you were happy with the D70, then it's a simple decision. If not get which ever Canon is at the same price level - D5 i think. Nikon and Canon are the only ones worth getting.

What is the budget?
I have a Pentax, and sadly have to say, all cameras using sony CCD sensor (Nikon, Minolta, Pentax, sony) have inferior picture quality to Canon's CMOS sensor (used by canon exclusively).
Everything looks ok when the image is well exposed, but in case of underexposure, there is still plenty of picture in dark areas in Canon images, when the other have lots of noise there.
I'd say, Canon jpg pictures are better material for post-processing than CCD sensor RAW sometimes.

(Jun 16 06, 04:27)Thought about that, figured there must be something different/better at a similar/slightly higher price range.

canon 20d

yep, canon 20d is a great camera – my wife is a photographer and she raves about the canon bodies and lenses.
but what will you be using it for? snapping pics here and there or formal photo shoots?

(Jun 16 06, 06:20)D70s? Probably D50 will be more than you'll need.
Newcoming sony has a stabilizer if this could be good news to you. There will be new pentax in August (with stabilizer as well)
Rand owns a nikon, he already spent too much money on it not to be biased :)

Thanks rafalski by the way, that's some good advice. I wouldn't have know about the CCD's in different cameras.

For commercial shots - canon 5D. Fullframe pics differ in quality just as much as medium format differs from 35mm. All the expensive studio shots for car catalogs and fashion magazines are shot in bigger format for a reason.

(Jun 16 06, 06:28)A bit of both to be honest, some formal photo shoots (we did a shoot of all the members of staff fairly recently & we are going to be looking at doing 'on-site' shoots for product pics) and I did the photo's for our conference last year. Plus any week-to-week stuff that crops up.

HumanMale, download samples from sites like http://dpreview.com and http://stevesdigicams.com (i think Steve has raw samples as well) and play with sliders in photoshop, see what you're getting and what you can develop from each camera.
I will prolly stick with pentax because it is about to get shake reduction in new models soon, but miss the material quality I was getting from canon.

Will do, thanks for the links.
Canon 20D & 30D:
which one out of those 2?!

5D is twice as expensive as d200, though
- HumanMale0
From reading up on a few sites, I'm tempted to suggest we get the Canon 30D.
We haven't got an lenses or other equipment left over 'cause the other company 'pinched' the lot, so we can safetly stray to another make without losing out.

Mind that if you're used to D70, you might throw curses at otherwise great Canon interface philosophy.
Also, if budget is an issue, choosing D70(s) will buy you more glass. Rand?..
