I am currently at a wedding in Valdez. Flew through Anchorage. Plan on doing lots of outdoor stuff. Anchorage is pretty big thought should be stuff to do.
Check out some pics of Valdez I just snapped, it is crazy here

my good friend lives there, has been for the last year. he worked with the university of alaska doing micro credit programs for people in chukotka.
the way he explains it, it just sounds awesome, walk outside mountains and animals moose, deer , nature trails, who wouldnt want to live there...it is cold though, but not that bad...there is one area he mentioned that sounded like the planet hoth.

(May 18 06, 18:07)bring shades, because you're going to need to sleep with them on and plenty of mosquito repelent

(May 18 06, 21:47)that's in the winter not the summer. ever been to Scandinavia?
Like all subarctic regions, the months from around May to July in the summer have no night, only a twilight during the night hours. The months of ~ November - January have little daylight.

Alaska rules. i have been there twice and once for an extended trip for ~ 7 weeks. it is so pure and clean there it makes you a little worried.
nightlife is a lot of beer, more beer, then some fights and shit. it's cool. ;)
most amazing fishing i have ever had and the fact there are more airplanes registered than cars rules.

Sounds like it'd be an awesome place to visit. I bet it's not that much colder than how it gets over here at times.

not mention some killer snowboarding
