web designer. 1 year professional experience. 5 years doing it for fun. what can i expect?
i've just finished university and i've been offered a job with a small but relatively successful company. 'yay' for me.
however, the £ they offered seems awfully low for what they want out of me.
i've been doing a lot of work for them in the past year.. done the whole meeting clients through to completing a site thing.. and they seem to like what i've done (seeing as they asked me to go fulltime) but i'm feeling severely undervalued.
i can't even say what they offered because; a) prying eyes. b) i'm ashamed.any ideas what i should be expecting?

I started on £16k straight after uni. But that has moved up to £25 in two years with the same agency.
I think thats about standard for London.
- scpgt0
hmm.
even 16k is lower than i'd like but i'd probably settle for that if it was made clear that there'd be room for progression.as it is though, they're not offering either (16k / future £££)

"hmm. even 16k is lower than i'd like"
well, web design maybe wasn't the best career choice. I know agencies that pay less than that. Bigger the name, smaller the pay.

HA!

really(?) feck.. i've been living in a fantasy world.
did i mention that i also do all the initial development work (xhtml/css/flash) before it gets handed over to intergrate CMS(?)
surely that counts for something (although, when i write it like that, it sounds very unimpressive.. but honestly, i do a lot)
:-/

Most important thing is to get experience, then if the pay is no good you can go somewhere else later. I started on 12k in London as a print designer. The more high profile the company is the more they can get away with.

wee secret - I'm not in London, but I'm 4 years in this lark and my pay is a bit less than one of those numbers skt mentioned.

12k-18k for someone fresh outta uni.
u might be able to squeeze more with your xhtml/css/flash skills though

I also started on 12k as a web designer...in Leeds tho. Been here two years and am on 20k now so as long as you show some progression they should up it after a while. A lot of places might keep you on low for your probationary period then whack it up after 3 months...

zero industry experience and 16k sounds fair. If you had at least six months on a fairly high profile job it'd be 17k. keep at it, work more, earn more.

pants.
not good.see, i wasn't ever really expecting a massive amount straight away but my earnings for the past year (based on working for them part-time, another part-time job, and the odd bit of freelancing) are more than i'd get working for them for full time (doing a lot more hours)..
.

go somewhere else then. your experience with them will get the other guys to give you closer to what you want. or just suck it up and work for them if you enjoy the work they do. None of us are buying ferraris here

Its more important to get your career off to a good start and get some good experience under your belt than worry about money. I'm sure you will be able to command a bigger pay packet in a year or two.
- skt0
Aye, thats about the size of it. If I didn't do freelance on the side I'd be fucked for cash.

i started on £19k two years ago, outside of london. i left after a year and got a job in london on £22k - Flash design, not code.
It (shouldn't be) about the money at the beginning - experience is what you need!

Ask for £15k with a rise to £16k after the first 6 months. I started on 13k and that was outside London a few years back. DW did a pay review last year and claimed 18k average (junior) in London bare in miond you are jsut starting out though. If your good you will get rewarded.
in my head
scpgt = Scapegoat, True??

i don't want to sound like i'm just whining about the money :-) i can more than accept that the experience is what i'm trying to get for the next few years but still, i didn't expect to come out of uni and then take a drop in my earnings..
but i think from the replies here, that i've at least got confirmation that i should try to push them for more/go elsewhere..
