A few years ago, my son asked me if he could play GTA on his xbox. I told him that when he was old enough to write an essay on misogyny and its effects on society then he could play. A few days ago, he came to me and told me he’d been watching episodes of Feminist Frequency and felt that he was ready to write that essay. His stepmother, @zjemptv and I came up with a list of questions. His answers, transcribed below (spelling errors corrected):

SAN FRANCISCO — The classroom of 10th graders had already learned about sexually transmitted diseases and various types of birth control. On this day, the teenagers gathered around tables to discuss another topic: how and why to make sure each step in a sexual encounter is met with consent.

Consent from the person you are kissing — or more — is not merely silence or a lack of protest, Shafia Zaloom, a health educator at the Urban School of San Francisco, told the students. They listened raptly, but several did not disguise how puzzled they felt.

“What does that mean — you have to say ‘yes’ every 10 minutes?” asked Aidan Ryan, 16, who sat near the front of the room.

“Pretty much,” Ms. Zaloom answered. “It’s not a timing thing, but whoever initiates things to another level has to ask.”

When I was young and even more pathetic than I am now (first month of university, or so), I was dragged into bed by a girl I liked and who - at least in her stupor - apparently liked me.

Being a complete and utter knob-end, I turned around and wanted to confirm, beyond all reasonable doubt, that I wasn't about to fuck up by assuming the next move.

So, I fucked up, and tried to confirm the next move with her.

Something pathetic along the lines of "Do... you... like me? Can I... ki...". Cut-short, fucking hell. I could see immediately that that was the completely wrong thing to do.

Strong women - actually, just people, just fucking humans - don't like insipid nonents who don't have self-belief. It isn't attractive.

We very quickly went back down stairs, me utterly deflated.

    Nothing ever happened between us.

    She had a wonderful bottom.

my argument about georges post is that it's GOOD for men and women to talk openly about what they want and don't want, and it's even more important for teens who are more likely to go along with something they're really not comfortable with, or to push their partner into something they're not ready for-- even if there's not the kind of violent intent that a rapist has.

I'm not a woman (newsflash), but for MANY women their first sexual experiences (not necessarily intercourse, but touching, etc.) were under pressure from a young man who was acting perhaps too agressively. It's not rape, but it's not complete consent either.

It's admittedly to garner or give consent when you're a crazy hormonal teenager who has urges but also fears and lots of conflicting feelings. Teaching affirmative consent encourages partners to look for the other to be really ready, and not pushing them beyond what they're honestly desiring and prepared for.

I'm as much to blame, because I never post anything serious in here. But it disappoints me that the discussion of feminism here is only about the crazy fringe of feminism.

Bringing up only the ridiculous stuff undermines any serious consideration of the need for feminism, and what it has to add to our lives as *men.* (Cause let's face it, only men are reading this thread.) For ppl who are already educated in it, maybe it doesn't matter as much to only consider the foolishness, but I'm positive there are guys on this blog that have never read a book about feminism.

If there's a will out there only to defame feminism by equating it to madness, well I would call that misogyny, and counter-productive.

    • More female feminists need to step up and shout down the lunatic fringe that's ruining the reputation and validity of feminists/feminism.i_monk

man girls are their own worst enemies

    "
Every woman at some point has compared their looks to another woman. (“I wish I had her hair”, “I want her body”) Sometimes, even I do in my own thoughts although I really try to avoid it (especially with my skin and the fact that I don’t have Venus dimples). But how can we as women ever love and accept ourselves if we’re so busy comparing ourselves to other women? A lot of people blame men for this but in my experience women perpetuate it way more than men do. Women have this mentality that all women are competition and anyone who is “prettier” is deemed a threat. This is how body shaming works. A woman sees a pretty woman and assumes she’s some kind of threat and automatically hates her, calls her a slut, says she’s “really not that pretty”, or any other forms of hatred formed from jealousy."

lol Venus Dimples? is that a thing now? like tight gap? FFS.

hey, the patriarchy isn't allowing us to performs well as man in our entry exams.
    normal world: work harder
    feminist utopia: let's ban exams

    wtf is going on

"As Naomi Wolf recently reminded us, young women consistently receive fewer first-class degrees than men at Oxford University, where I work, even when marking is blind. Meanwhile, Russell Group universities consistently admit a very low proportion of working-class and BME students. There are concerns that the kind of assertive declarations that win middle-class white men firsts also gain them preferment at Oxbridge interviews. There’s an inequality crisis in university admissions and assessment.

What’s to be done? We could spend the next decade, as we have the last, researching and debating this – or we could simply abolish university assessment and entry requirements."
