ivan, let me know if you are serious about going over there for 6months to a year......I might be interested in heading over with you. I'm thinking more around the 6 month mark.

DUBAI IS THE ILLEST CITY EVER! IM TRYNA JUMP OVER THERE AND KICK IT FOR A LONG MINUTE. THEY HAVE THE HOTTEST SCIENCE, ITS THE FUTURE PARADICE CITY. ISLANDS IN THE SHAPE OF LOGOS. UNDERWATER HOTELS. TALLEST BUILDING IN WORLD. ENCOLOSED SKI RESORTS IN 120F HEAT. ITS SO NEXT LEVEL AND SO SLEPT ON YOU NEVER EVEN HEAR ABOUT IT.

sounds good. I'm at a point now where I just want to try something new. Dubai sounds great, but the hinge point is gonna be finding agencies/studios that are pushing it.
It's not worth it to me to be there unless the work is amazing.

Its funny how everyone thinks completely different about Dubai and how perfect that place is because BBC won’t stop showing the documentary on all the luxurious real estate projects Dubai has going.
I’ve been in Dubai all my life, was born here actually and moved to Canada for a bit – now I moved back 2-3 years ago and work at a very busy online agency called “Flip Media” – http://www.flipcorp.com when it comes to online we are the leading interactive agency in the middle east.
Speaking of design jobs, if you are thinking of working in Dubai, please be warned that don’t expect it to be that great. Chances are you might get paid real less and if you are a designer who looks at his/her work at a really personal level than things could be quite shitty for you. Why because clients are really unreasonable here – its more about quantity than quality here.
If you are into print then there are some worldwide known agencies you could be working here with like Leo Burnett, Wunderman, Ogilvy, Saatchi all have fancy offices here. I am actually trying to get a job at one of those agencies listed above but I am sure things won’t be that different.
However, there are good things about Dubai also. The night life is pretty amazing, no taxes, great clubs, hot chicks (especially if you are into blondes) and if you get lucky at a very big agency, chances are you might get hooked up with great benefits, like company provided car, house, accommodation at some luxurious villa, but then that all depends on how lucky you get and what is your position in the company you work for. For all those of you who hate winter, Dubai is always sunny, sometimes gets really hot and that’s when everyone runs back to there home countries for vacation.
But yea, I don’t really like Dubai anymore, maybe I am just bored of it? But then again most of us have shit jobs sometimes and everyone is working towards finding something they will like one day.
Sorry for the rant haha.

I have a friend that was there for about 6 months, she was going to school and working doing environmental graphics and print work. She loved it, and was clearing about $5000 US a month working freelance. But she did have some pretty sweet hook-ups...

Just thinking about it this way: some of the largest shopping malls in a city as small new orleans.
ATP tennis tournamnet, pga golf something, world horse racing cup, fancy cars all over the place, one of the biggest shopping festival held every year, the beach, palm islands, world islands, etc.

Great post Prmthn.
Thanks for the insider's perspective. I have a few friends here that have lived there, but mostly with parents in the oil business.
Good to learn more about the design scene there.
