Why is survival "good"

(Feb 3 06, 10:18)WOW
well done, you've just said the stupidest thing i've ever heard, time to find another avatar?
- flagellum0
in your attempt at a clever reply and dodging your conundrum, you missed the point I was making.
Survival doesn't matter, under your world view. "Good" cannot exist. As Johnson rightly noted, "In this reductionist world ideas are not good or bad, ugly or beautiful."

The base unit for selection is the gene, and altruism is only benificial to evolution if it is counter-intuitively selfish. There is a sound logic behind this, but it is a bit deep for this thread, so it may not be the time or the place...

pavlov,
The entire field of "evolutionary psychology" is riddled with more gaping holes than a wheel of swiss cheese. Darwinists put far too much emphasis on genetic predispositions and try to reduce everything down to predetermined materialistic mechanisms. The notions don't stand up under scrutiny.
This thread is about Islam. Resurrect one of the many Darwin threads if you want to discuss this, Brook.

i dont think science was ever meant to be ABSOLUTE in the way most religions claim to be ABSOLUTE.

Really, this is just insane...
First, you have no idea what "my world view" is, don't presume to.
second, Surival is important for very, very, obvious reasons, no matter what world view you subscribe to.

Yes, of course, but i am suggesting that altruism works by benifiting "selfish genes" who inhabit different bodies, as is with kin, not by considering the "group as a whole"
essentially i disagree with the "group selection" idea, but going into it here is not really appropriate.

I like to draw pictures of Jesus and Mohammed making sweet sweet love while lots of sweet little bunnys are hopping around them and wispy koalas sit in the trees.

I honestly question the idea of bringing a child into the world where people are threatened with death, kidnapped, and nations are boycotted over the content of a cartoon.
