Genome,
It is the case, if people are not punished in this world, they escape punishment.
Whether i think it is o.k or not is besides the point.
The promise of an afterlife is one of the main reasons people can be compelled to commmit attrocitys, like those of 9/11.
In nature good people do good things and bad people do bad things, only religion can make good people do bad things...

mrdobs, be sure to get Mimio and the scores other posters who see no need in revealing those details, to chime in. And what does it have to do with opinions and this topic?
Brook, without an absolute and objective standars of truth and morality, there is no such thing "bad" and "good". As a Materialistic Reductionist, you are thoroughly contradicting yourself. If we are merely higher primates, anything goes and you can't judge me for a single thing.

standars = standard.
- mrdobolina0
pussy.
- flagellum0
Brook,
"only religion can make good people do bad things..."
Did you say that with a straight face? And tell me, in the absense of any standard for morality (that's valid)... what is "good"?

O.k, note, good and bad are human values attached to behaviour, and the context in which i use them is that of a "material reductionist"
A "good" deed increases the chance of an individual's survival.
A "bad" deed decreases the chance of a individual's survival.
Yes, i said it with a straight face, yes, i meant it.
- pavlovs_dog0
A "good" deed increases the chance of the species survival.
A "bad" deed decreases the chance of the species survival.
..more like? would you have ever existed if the other were true?

So, then Brook, by your reasoning, there is nothing else besides religion which can make "good" people do "bad" things. Lovely reasoning.
And so, if I destroy all competitors to my survival via any means... I'm doing a "good" thing. Lovely value system. And exactly what's wrong with our culture. Thank your for demonstrating this.
You heard it, folks. Do whatever is necessary for survival. Whatever you do is "good".
And again, Brook, these "values" do not exist under your world view.
- Brookoioioi0
Pavlov, although the analogy of species survival may be o.k, i think it is misleading to assume that is the way it actually works. Species survial is not the issue, remember that evolution is blind to this. The base unit for selection is the gene, and altruism is only benificial to evolution if it is counter-intuitively selfish. There is a sound logic behind this, but it is a bit deep for this thread, so it may not be the time or the place...
- Brookoioioi0
As usual genome, you were in such a hurry to defend your postion you forgot to actually read my post. A "good" deed is one which is advantagous to "another" individuals survival, and the opposite for a "bad" deed...
- flagellum0
Brook, it does little to change the implications of your point... and it's flawed reasoning.
Why is survival "good"? What makes it "good", in your absense of a standard.
