So my new car has an mp3 cd player, and I've never burnt an mp3 cd. I tried tonight, but I don't think iTunes will burn an mp3 cd since all the music in my iTunes is m4a. Is there something I need to download to do this? How can I turn these m4a's into mp3's?

just burn it using disc utility...or toast. not sure if you are on a mac or pc but dragging and dropping the mp3 tracks onto the disc icon should work.
ah...reread your post. you will need to convert them into mp3 files to do what i stated above. you can use several programs, and itunes is one of them.

How can I use iTunes to do it? I'm on a Mac...
Oh, and the subject of this thread should be "m4a" not "mp4a"...my bad.

go to preferences>advanced>importing>i... using
change to mp3 and control click all tracks you want to convert and choose: convert to selection
viola!

Hmmm...I got "could not be converted because protected files cannot be converted to other formats..."

ahhhh. shit. the only way i know to get around that (and there probably is a hack to this) is to just drag all music to blank disc and burn as data then reimport unfortunately...it takes a bit of time but works

I'll give that a try...thanks...
So iTunes and my iPod won't have a problem playing tracks imported as mp3s?

(Jan 29 06,nope. it can play all the typical music files. not sure but itunes may auto convert them to m4a when dropping them on the ipod though...not sure

So I just got done burning some songs as data files, and then reimporting them as mp3s and I actually got the same message as before.
I think I did what you said to do...anything else I should be doing? Or am I doing something wrong?
FYI, under prefs/burning I choose data cd, and then under importing I choose mp3 encoder...

are you buring the disc through itunes?
if so just burn it using disc utility.
it may just be copying over the encrypted data otherwise.
other than that i can't help you. that has alway worked for me : \

Your car CD player can't play the normal music CD's that iTunes can make, right? it only plays MP3 format?

-----------------------I never use mp4a when importing music to itunes, just in case I want to move the songs somewhere else.
Converting from mp4a to mp3 you're gonna lose some quality, which might be ok for car use

I've had similar problems and similar solutions that sometimes work, sometimes fail.
Honestly, the only time its actually failed is when I've purchased a new track (specifically an audiobook), asked for my iTunes password, and actually said something about allowing me to transfer it to only 3 other computers or sources.
Perhaps the mp3 gods are crackin' down. I dunno. Sorry if that doesn't help.

My car plays both regular and mp3 cd's. I have a bunch of regular cd's loaded, but I wanna try out the mp3 cd's. But thanks to iTunes I'm finding it really hard to make an mp3 cd. Apparently all the music I've ever uploaded or downloaded has been in m4a format. I'll try burning a cd using the disk utility instead of the iTunes burner and see if that helps.
But shouldn't there be some kind of free download program that can easily convert from m4a to mp3?

And only $299.99? What a bargain!
Thanks...but I think I'll do it the hard way...

upload one of your protected song files. I want to try to convert it to mp3 for you. It will take another wasted disk but we can see if it works in your car then

I'm actually not at home right now, so I'll upload one of the tracks when I get back home..by the way, how do I upload a track?
