The way i organize my tunes is this:
- ALL tunes are on a separate drive
- ALL are organized by artist name/album
- for singles I create folders for each genre... example (rock singles, punk singels,...etc.) and then I tag them with an asterisk at the front of the artist name like this:
*Duran Duran "Hungry Like the Wolf"
This way ALL the singles when imported into itunes will reside on the top of the library list instead of mixed in with the albums.

MOST IMPORTANT is to uncheck the preference in itunes:
- Copy music to itunes music folder

if you have 197 gigs of tunes, i dare say sir.. you are not a fan of anything, but a fan of everything
which means you are not a fan of anything

(Nov 3 05, 20:03)Most of em are DJ mixes. Different years/genres etc. thats what i collect - i have no more than 20 actual albums....

I used the techno database at www.discogs.com and this program my friend sent me called Barbarian.
It goes through all your files, then searches the Discogs database for the track, and tags the track in a particular syntax, and stores it in the correct folder -> subfolder structure.
Bear in mind, this program really only works for the styles of music you're going to find at discogs. if your type of music isn't in there, you're shit outta luck. (PC based too, sorry Mac users)
For my live sets, I always have name first, minus the DJ stored alphabetically. If you use mp3 to vinyl mixing programs like Stanton Final Scratch, the search mechanism is much like Windows Explorer, and the folder structure suits me fine.

i've just got 150 GBs dedicated to tunes going in and out.. constantly rotating.
can't stand the managed itunes library and never use it. i just create a new playlist every month and use it to dump and sample my incoming mp3s.
