im just curious how other people have overtime or weekends worked out with the boss.
How are you compensated, if at all?

anyone????
i know it can be a touchy subject

i work weekends often. no overtime though. it was said so in the contract.
i am a slave to the man.

Have it in the contract. Some people have it that anytime after 8 hours gets billed as overtime (even if you haven't worked 40 hours in the week). Other people have it that anytime over 40 hours in one business week is overtime. Weekends usually qualify for time and a half and Holidays usually qualify as double time.

time and a half!

Whenever its over and above (i'm not talking about an extra hour or three) like working a weekened convention, i try and work out some flex time with the boss. (but rememebr...NEVER CALL IT FLEXTIME...that word freaks 'em out...just say you want to swap some time off for the extra work you did.

of course i'm not compensated

What zombiewoof said.
My girlfriend works for an arts foundation and always works nights and weekends and she has like 4 weeks of "FlexTime"......ya, don't call it FlexTime......even though its totally legit bosses don't like to hear it like that.....Flextime sounds like you're working less, not more.

be your own boss, its easier to deal with your own bullshit that way.

what i dont understand is why this is such an accepted reality, no other job is really like this. Most other industry protects is employees and lays out guidelines for this type of stuff.
I hate that we are all being taken advantage of

no overtime, no weekends. last job was all overtime and mandatory saturdays (which i refused to do) and it was never compensated.

sometimes i like being taken advantage of
- Rand0
me too-- so I can seeth with the resentment that has supplanted positive emotion
- emokid0
that just might have been the best sentence i've read all week
- designaked0
The reason we are taken advantage of is simple...
There are 100 people in line behind each and every one of us waiting to step into place as soon as we are gone. The "man" knows this and knows that he/she can get away with more because you can be replaced within a week.
Almost every design job that gets posted has an immediate response of anywhere from 100-1000 applicants. No matter if its for a hole in the wall 3 person "design" studio or one of the top studios in the world. Most bosses don't know the value of a good designer and think they can just plug in anyone who knows the Adobe suite. Most people forget that good (and especially great) design has almost nothing to do with the ability to use Quark or Photoshop or Illustrator. So, with this thought process, its easy to treat someone like crap thinking that if they quit or you fire them that you will have just as good of a replacement in there within the week.
Really, it comes down to ignorance on the part of the employer.

i get taken advantage of because i know i am not very good.
