i was going thru an intersection and a guy coming towards me turned right infront of me, didnt see me (in australia) i ran into his bonnet and flew over the top of his audi TT.

------------------------------what kind of bike do you want? a sport bike like a Ninja? a cruiser like a harley?
for now, my suggestion is that you stay off anything above 500cc

1. take a riding course.
2. wear protective gear. even in summer.
3. a 750cc bike is a good size to start with. not too much to handle for most beginners and you won't grow out of it too quickly.

This is a great bike for learning, light, agile and not too much torque.

This is my dream bike:

it's about time we got back to talking about bikes.
i'm obsessed with them, and have been all summer.
i just sold my first bike which i've had for over 4 years, a honda nighthawk 750 (good size, start there), and bought a BMW R1100--similar to that one in the post above, but a standard, not a cruiser.
black with white pinstripes, huge engine. i love it.
seriously, don't be fazed by 'don't crash it' or anything like that. just buy a bike and start driving around local areas and spread out the more you do it. you will be fine if your riding expectations grow with your ability... which takes a bit of time.
i think i can honestly say that driving my bike has gotten me through this summer, which otherwise, was pretty hard for me.
where do you live? if yr around NYC, i know a lot of things going on with biking around here, and of course, i'd totally hit the road with you.
what bikes are you looking at? email me if you want me to check anything out for possible issues or whatever. i really enjoy it and will always like an excuse to look at more bikes :)

ps. the only other message boards i read on the web are motorcycle boards.

enjine, no shit ;)
no really, i just been turned on to them, even though we all know the evil shit that can happen, i plan on strictly urban use, nothing crazy out in the country because knowing my luck i'd get nailed :)
what does a decent ninja go for these days ?
- enjine0
dude, city riding is the hardest riding. at least here in manhattan.
ninjas... dunno, i'll check out ebay in the morning at work. i've been looking at some yamaha sport bikes for a co-worker too, which are really nice and pretty decently priced. if you know exactly which bike to get, there are better ways than ebay to get one i guess.

my friend just bought a ninja 600 something rather, set him back $15-16k AUD... probably alot less over there in the states.
- enjine0
that's a good point, how much do you want to spend?
- fadeproof0
i mean, i can rock, max, about $15k - if need be, 16, but thats pushing it - ive also been researching insurance companies - i know its a big investment, but i dont care i love this sh*t :p
- subversve0
anyone else ride in the bay area?
- spk0
man... if you you want a crotch rocket i would pick up an used ducati 916... an all time classic.
i love my early '94 ducati m-900... 10 years old and still a total head turner... the newer models are less cool.
- enjine0
first bike 15k?
hahahah... don't even try to go there. seriously, ... first bikes are about getting something good that will last, and staying with it for a while, then getting what you *really* want.you'll probably drop it a few times, which really isn't a big deal, but start out easy then work it up. plus, you know, if you get your dream machine right off the bat, what are you going to lust over? that's half the fun.
if you can rock 5k, you will get a killer bike that's a 3-5 years old and will run + look like new. easy enough.
then sell it for more than you bought it, and get a bike that you learn you want by what you don't like about that bike.
i mean, in my book, any bike is a good bike. it's about the riding.
as for insurance, i'm 27, live in manhattan, and it's only 400 bux a year through progressive. and it was only 280 when i had a 750cc (the 1100cc is what pushed it up)
can't wait to hit up ebay and cycletrader to see what they've got for ya ;)
- enjine0
yeah, ducatis are beautiful, but they require way more maintenance than a jap bike.
re-adjust the valves every 4k? i don't think so!
then again.... yyyeeaaaahhhh get the ducati!! them shits are sweet!
