I am looking to buy the Canon i9900 printer this week, it has come down in price and will be the perfect companion for school, not having to worry about running off to the school labs, kinkos, or other service bureau at the last minute.
Anyways, currently I have an i960 with the same ink carts, and I have always bought Canon ones. But i remember reading on here, and i think maybe brooke may have mentiond it, but you can get really cheap ink carts for 1 or 2 bucks each on ebay.
Most of the really afforable ones are not Canon, and I was wondering if anyone has bought third party ink carts like these and if so have you had any problems, is the quality good?
Like this sort of thing:

not sure. i haven't heard good things about generic inks but i guess it depends on what you want to use them for.
i got the s9000 and it's rad. goes through ink like water though : \
at least it has lasted more 11 months and counting...unlike my epson!6 months. dead.

ahh damn, i was hoping for good reviews.
mostly printing out my projects to avoid the crappy lasers at kinkos and school labs.
my i960 on normal inks has been working fine for about a year and a half with no issues.

about the inks or the printer?
my friend got the 9900 about 4 months ago. that thing is amazing!
the inks; well i've never used them personally so i could be totally wrong. i've just heard more bad things about them than good, like gumming up the printer, fading, streaking, etc.

Im definitely sold on the printer, amazing colour with the 9 colour system.
Mostly just looking for people experience or suggestions regarding the ink. Still going to buy it but as a student if I could find some deals for quality ink, that would be ideal, if not I will have to just eat the cost of the genuine canon products (which in comparison are not that expensive at least)

I got the i9900. I think it is great.
I've only sticked to Canons ink, and Canons paper.
Excellent printouts. But although the color stays sharp it tends to blur out after a while. Maybe it is the paper I use, or the summer humidity, who knows?

i got the i9950, it's maybe just a slightly newer or european version of i9900.
we tried some cheap ink cartridges and they just didn't mix with the proper ones. maybe if you had all 8 cartridges as one brand they'd b fine, otherwise it was crap.
the printer is pretty decent.

PC gives the 9900 the highest marks, although I still love my Epson Photo 960 (even though its only a year old NO store carries teh ink!! I have to order it...damn it).
I'd stay away from generic inks. They tend to clog and the black looks bad, in my experience. Stick with what they recommend.

i buy the store re-packaged ink from staples. i have never tried these super cheap inks b/c my friend in school had them explode on her while trying to print. just seems you get what you pay for. buying in bulk cuts the price as well.

Sounds like I am sticking to the canon inks.
Just hooked this thing up. Can't wait to use it.
The only disapointment, after spending 600 canadian on a printer, I thought it was a bit lame that they didnt even give you a couple samples of 13x19 paper in the box.

Anyone got any paper links or advice for 13x19 matte?
I dont know if other brands like HP or Epson paper make a difference.

i love the printer! i havnt had a chance to go nuts on the photo printing yet, but the speed x quality is definitely better than some of the latest epsons.
ive teamed this badboy up with a canon 8400F scanner recently and im really pleased by the speed of the thing, you should check it out if youre looking for a scanner, at 130$ USD on amazon its a steal.
