"regular" global warming cycle
^ huh?
my understanding is that the hurricane cycle is caused by the ocean currents, like el nino...
there is a very good case to be made that global warming (man made co2/methane) is having a drastic effect on polar regions today (+ 2 or 3 degrees) ....but hurricanes?
now, fifty or a hunderd years down the road? there is a possibilty, even a strong possibilty many major costal cities will see this kind of flooding...

(Sep 7 05, 21:06)absolutely! apparently the temperature in the Gulf of Mexico was way above normal this year - around 30° C - which gave Katrina an enormous boost of energy as it approached land.

yes I was abducted and they pleasured me deeply

They live in a Typhoon Ring not a Hurricane Belt.
There's more headed out way.
No worries, as long as it's not LA, most states are more than prepared to evacuate if they are Class 5.

swissRe waits since 18 yrs this happens. follow the thought what would economically happen when japan takes all it's money home.....

As far as I know, hurricane are cyclical in the atlantic (well, the atlantic is the only place for 'hurricanes') in 20 or 30 year cycles. Not sure if there is much relation to il nino.
As much as I believe that global warming due to human activity is pretty apparent, I am not sure this years crop of hurricanes is due to it. It seems to fit the longer range cycle of hurricanes.
Not sure if the cyclones in the pacific have varied in intenisty and frequency in cyclews over the years - any one got any info. That'd be interesting...
The Daily News here in NY ran an article about what parts of New York City would be underwater if a comprable storm the size of Katrina hit NYC. Not pretty. But at least we're not below sea level.
I think the superstorms are still a few decades off...

A little bit of global warming for breakfast.

Global Warming is overrated.
There have been higher levels of it in the past, due to a number of reasons, vulcanism for one, and no evidence of paleo-catostophic events such as Hurricanes.

we read/watch too much news.

True, but human civilization hasn't been at a similar point, so who knows what the consequences would be for civilization. My faith in human beings ingenuity tells me we'll muddle through as a species - but there will be dramatic impact on societies across the globe.

There's no "overwhelming" evidence of evolution, that's why it's still a theory. Actually, quite the contrary, we still cannot find any missing link for any species. Bet most people didn't know that. Microevolution = proven, Macroevolution = unproven.

And so we now arrive in the Great Second Middle Ages.Just tlike the first one, when all the rubes got half the crap that the Greeks and Roman painstakingly accumulated just plain wrong, and allowed a knowledgable "priestly" class of aristocrats to rule everything - well..we've arrived again.
You, cuesta have drank the koolaid.
I'm moving to Ireland to open a 20th century monastery on some wind swept Gaelic Isle to store all the scientific knowledge that all you idiots are going to either fuck up and/or lose and pray for a Second Rennaissance before it's too late.

The typhoon prior to "Nabi" that was here a week ago or so were also crazy. I think the Southern part of Japan was struck the hardest, but even here in Tokyo I was wading in water.
The sadest part is that there is always one or two elderly people dying with each and every typhoon. And almost everyone dies doing the same thing: trying to fix the tv-antenna or something on the roof. It's sad.

we have a lot of storms in barcelona. god is furious with the damn tourists
- slappy0
not that you can comapre japans storms to new orleans, its just freaky how battered the planets getting atm.

Agreed Peter, always the same on the news here...
and always trying to fix their TV antenna even though the entire network is down.
My cable channels are gone instantly when typhoons come near Tokyo.
They do seem to be getting gradually stronger in power.
I'm off to Okinawa for some sun in October, cheap tickets, just hope I miss any typhoons...

Found this on a Japanese forum. It is suprisingly accurate for the television here:
"Typhoon TV news drinking game
Take one slug for every reporter standing outside in waterproofs telling you it's rainy/windy.
Take one slug for every shot of waves breaking over a not particularly interesting rocky shore or a tree blowing in the wind.
Take three slugs for the above, but at night time when everything is just a dark blur.
Take two slugs for every shot of a brolly being blown inside out.
Abstain for 10 minutes for each new item of real news about the typhoon - eg, another reported injury/death.
Guaranteed to be plastered within an hour of turning on the telly!"

science anyone?
we're in the upswing of what appears to be a 30 year cycle for hurricanes.
more people live in costal area then ever.
the instant transmission of news (24 hrs a day) makes virtually the entire world aware of every calamity.
