well, while I was in the womb, my mother gave me some pens, and I used to do graf on her womb wall. When the doctor was pulling me out he got a peek at some of the graf I was doing, and he said. Kid you gotta be a designer. Beat that!!!

I'm a webdesigner. Does that count :P
In which case I got into it because I focused on digital & interactive art at university.
But it is nice having your work reach a large audience, even if it is pushing a product.

growing up sketching and watching cartoons pretty much did it. throw in making old school birthday cards and cheezy banners for my dads restaurant on printshop pro on an old ibm didnt hurt either.
fast forward to jr high and high school and there were watercolor classes, drawing class, painting, sculpting and all sorts of fun stuff.
science and math just wernt cool anymore when u had video games, sports, and music
the turning point was hearing a graphic designer friend of my teacher talk about designing packaging for video games and that just got me hooked
still got a lot to learn about being a designer but im not quitting till i die

Where's kona today?
Because I just know his answer would be "I design because there's no money in professional buttcheek henna tattoos."

Sure I was drawing the kiddy stuff...but I was totally into letterforms...used to love to draw the STP logo from Richard Petty's Nascar, circa 1978. Then evolved into bubble letterforms in the early breakdancing era, like 1985-ish.
No offense taken, this is the NTB right?...a bunch of "smart ass" designer types.

why design?
because it's just so damn easy for me to do -- and the money i make! pfft! it's like rolling a whino...
- jamble0
come on, be honest now, you weren't drawing dinosaurs like everyone else?
(sorry if I sounded rude, no offense :) )

(Aug 23 05, 08:41)Serious! I was drawing other existing logos that were around me...because I found letters/type interesting. Not like I was creating branding campaigns or ID systems yet – you silly arse!

Drawing logos as early as kindergarden while all the other kids were drawing box houses with curling smoke coming out of the chimmney.
When I saw my first print of set type come out of a post script printer, then really fell in LOVE.
I can get paid for this? Yes!

Always got in trouble in school for drawing instead of taking notes.
Started as a bio major in college, was better at drawing the dissections than memorizing info.

i like working creatively but i was not willing to enter the cut-throat world of fine art.
with design i can be somewhat creative but have a steady job too.
and eventually, the prospect of freelancing / starting my own studio, setting my own hours... that sounds good to me.

after many long years in the jungle, hunting Pygmies for the circus, I decided I wanted to make a difference, but they wouldn't let me, so I chose this instead...
