http://www.freshnessmag.com has a sneaker directory... regardless if you're looking for shoes or not, all of these shops in interesting areas and are near something else you'd probably want to see.
my picks from my last trip -
- moma
- zakka corp http://www.zakkacorp.com
- kinkokunia bookstore (rockefeller plaza.. japanese bookstore with lots of design stuff)

what would be the best place to find accomodation? I will give google a go, though.
- e-pill0
it all depends on how much you can spend...
what is semi permanent... ? ? ? ???
- eficks0
i guess i dont have too much to spend on accommodation, probably max about $1k for a week or 2. would prefer less though.

sorry, bad url.

turntable lab is good, but their storefront just doesn't cut it compared to their website.. its definitely worth a stop though.

$1k for a week? damn, glad i have friend's couches to crash on

you could check out zakka in chinatown/soho... if you are into the vinyl toy scene there are a couple cool stores to check out: kitrobot and toy tokyo.
museums are cool also if you are into that... the MoMA just reopened over the winter and is really nice. it's free on fridays from 4-8pm (at least it used to be, might want to check) so that's a good deal if you don't mind a little crowd.
other than that, hang around the east/west village and have some beer and good food.

forget those vinyl stores, lets play Lazer Tag in Times Square on acid!!!!!!!
:)

I still haven't heard anything about why people aren't excited about this one.
