Whats the differnce between linking an flv file rather than embedding video in flash? Hope that makes sense. Any help is appreciated!

an flv has just the video in it and the ext. FLV.
an embedded video can have other elements in it such as video control bars and text, and it can be exported as a SWF.
very simular tho.

should you compress a video to flv before putting it in flash? or is a flv used usually externally?

flv is best for streaming video. we always use them if the video is over 1meg. ya' know, so the viewer doesn't have to wait for the whole thing to download before they can start viewing

FLVs can only be imported at runtime (like a loadMovie) with Flash Player 7.
If you wrap the FLV in an SWF, you can then load it in using Flash Player 6.
In regards to streaming, the only way to get video streaming in Flash is to use Flash Communication Server, which is a pain in the ass.
Doing it any other way is progressive streaming, which loads video in larger chunks and leaves a copy of it on your user's harddrive.

im gettin a grasp on it. One more ques. How about loading time? I kno its a general ques but do u have to dl the entire file befor u play? hope not a dumb ques

No, you don't have to wait for the whole thing to load. You have to wait longer than you would with it streaming w/ Flash Communication Server.
Also, if you plan on using Actionscript to make things fast forward and stop, the syntax is different if you're dealing directly with an FLVs. No gotoAndPlay, etc.
