Okay I am going back to school in September. My employer doesnt have a clue.
Not sure if I should tell them soon (was thinking monday). Or wait.
They will be up shit creek if I only give them a couple weeks notice....yet it could be an uncomfortable 2 months if I tell them on Monday.
What is the ethical thing to do, they are short staffed as it is; with some big projects on the horrizon. Normally I wouldnt give a fuck, but they hired me out of university.
(i've only been at the job for a year)

i once gave a 2 month notice. My boss thanked me before I left. It took the pressure off of his back.

well you could give them 2 months notice and they could tell you to walk and give you your 2 weeks plus any serverance you've accumulated.
so i would say look out for number one... 2weeks is fair.

they could tell you to walk and give you your 2 weeks

They can do that?
- Ginja0
Of course they can do that, and do you think they would think twice about it...

if you give notice that you're leaving, they can tell you to leave tomorrow.

I see. lol
Well maybe I will wait :)

i gave my boss 2 months. if you work with cool people, they will be cool to you. no nice boss would tell you to walk by giving them the heads up early...seriously.

They can, but if you have a good relationship with them I would give them the heads up, why burn bridges?
If you hate them give them 1 days notice.

Agreed. If your boss is cool, or at least not a total shithead, then he'll appreciate the notice. It takes a long time to find replacements sometimes.

Tell them now that you're going in for surgery the same date you want to quit, and when there's like two days left you go like "uh, dude i never said pube transplant! I said QUIT!"

How about giving a 3 or 4 week notice. That should give them plenty of time.

don't burn bridges, you want to leave your work in good terms. If not, it might bite you in the arse when you less expect it.
It depends how good your relationship with your boss is. If you think they will can you then you should give 2 weeks.

Even if you hate your boss, they may know ppl in your industry. It pays to be nice/ considerate/ professional even when others aren't. Promise.
When people were bailing from my last company like fleas off a dead dog, i ran into alot of them later on while freelancing. Its a small community in the sense of, you will run into some of them again. hope that helps

i'd say 4weeks at most. 2months seems a bit much. but it's relative to amount of responsibilities you have.

Never ever burn your bridges, even if you don't like them, always have an option. As was mentioned, you never know if that big job in the future might be one where it's a friend of theirs for example.
Don't you have a contract with a defined notice period? If so, give that, if you don't, give them what you think is a reasonable period (I'd suggest a month to 6 weeks is fair).

what school you going to?

can i have your job? lord knows i need it.

30 days is plenty for them to find and train a replacement. Especially if someone straight out of school can do it.
