I see a lot of people here with external HD's. What's the attraction? Do you really move it around a lot?
- lvl_130
that's not enough storage! you should have went for the tera.
: )

I hope it cheats on you with a Mexican pool boy!

solid. yeah, i use my all the time. and i bring it to work a lot too.
- fate_redux0
Solid, the point is to have something away from the crashes and virii of your computer, something you only connect when needed as backup/retrieval.

well its 250gb... i only have 80gigs on my powerbook... so its nice to have all that storage... and its also nice to have a backup...
dont think i'll be bringing it to work at all.. as i bring my pb to work... and i'd just have the files on that...
but the main thing is having a back-up of all my stuff in case my computer craps out.

it's been treating me good nonstop since xmas

Even if you aren't moving the drives around, its nice to be able to swap them between computers as your backup needs change from week to week... or if you need to move LOTS of files between computers fast (4 times faster than ethernet)... also useful if you've run out of internal drive bays...

when working on a laptop, it is a must to do backups weekly on a external hd. you never knwo what is gonna happen, theifs, crash etc.

shit dinky... thats what im scared of!!!
- MrDinky0
you know that the HD is those things are cheap ass ones..
- nick0
but are there any safer alternatives to the Lacie's? i heard it was better than the Maxor...
bahhhhh
- Solid0
hahaha - way to make him feel better Dink :D

i've had the same one (only 80 gb) for 2 years now, no problems.
- nick0
do you guys ever turn the things off? or do u just keep em running always?
- Solid0
Do those things require their own power source? Are they attached to external power brick?
- MrDinky0
Western Digital and Maxtor are pretty good HDs
most computers have them.
you could also get Sea Gate..but they make ugly looking ones.
honestly, after 3 of Lacie fried, i just bought a case and HD and assembled them my self. which is the same shit.

make sure you use a proper backup software...ideally you should be doing a daily incremental backup (acts as a sort of versioning system then as well, enabling you to jump back to any saved version of any file), and ideally to more than one drive, so if any one drive dies it's no big deal...
- MrDinky0
after use, i always turn it off...
if you turn and turn off alot its not good BUT.. the HDs get pretty dang hot..
