Best external HD manufacturer?
I bought a maxtor once and a few months later it started making a high pitched humming noise.
I have my eye on LaCie?

buy a samsung hard drive. nice, fast, great warranty.
then just buy an enclosure of new egg. cheaper better faster custom.

Can I use a firewire 800 in a 400 port?

yes you can, use fw 800 on a 400 port, but obviously at 400 speeds.

I don't know much about them but I have a XiMeta that cost me about $250CAD.
No problems with it, and and advantage is that you can wire it into a network if you needed to do so...

i'm pretty sure it's compatible. i think it's comparable to usb and usb2. both work but it will work on the slower obviously

as for manufacturers... i dunno, i've heeard hortror stories about every singlee brand... i've had good (read: uneveentful) experiences with deskstars, but again, i have heard terrible things...
i'm eyeballing that lacie terabyte drive, myself, but only cuz it's that fuckin' big, and i'm a packrat... not very portable, if that is one of your considerations...
i have external scsi lacies from '98 that are still tickin on servers, (frankensteined starmax 604e/160, a 9600/350) with no problems at all, on most days for years and years... forget who made the actual drives...
