What specs are you looking for? IE screensize, processor speed, etc.
Personally, I'm waiting for the Asus S5a that is going to be released in the next few weeks.

Whats wrong with a Mac?

do you need a laptop? do you do pressos to clients off site? what's your thinking there...
i've always seen laptops as overkill (and small monitors) for not much real benefit if you're not moving around heaps...

I use it for cafes.... travel...hotel rooms... bring to a friends house... client meetings... the back porch.... my bed... the floor....the couch... or any other place besides my desk w/ norm computer.....

you would be surprised how nice it is to type on a lap....
and also to just get away from your desk...

thanksfor the replies.
let me quickly run through the responses as i remember them:
specs are basically something relatively fast, enough ram slots, nice clear screen (15 in. nothing bigger). decent battery life.
why not mac. no reason specific. look nice. slim and light. flash runs like shit on them. too expensive. have all pc software.
someone said toshibas are shit. haven't ever owned one, but they seem to be one of the top (other than sony viao) and i have heard that comparing the two is like comparing oranges to oranges...then add at least $100 to buy the sony.
liquid nailed it. getting away from the desk is key. and i will be on the road for clients so there is a def. need for a laptop.
someone said something about thinkpad...haven't researched them, so i really have no clue. i'll check them now though. any more suggestions/observations?

I wouldn't say that Toshiba laptops are one of the best. I'd have to say that the top tier laptops are IBM and Apple and maybe Dell (although I'm not a fan of any of their machines). Below them would be Toshiba and Sony.
I currently own a Toshiba Satellite. The HD crapped out in less than a year. Hence why I'm in the hunt for a new laptop.
If you're heart isn't settled on the Toshiba, take a look at the Asus V6. Its on the Sonoma platform. If you have no idea who Asus is, they are the original design manufacturers for Sony, Apple, etc.
Other places too look is the Alienware Sentia, Winbook, Averatec.
Look up notebookforums.com and notebookreview.com for some good reading.

Sony, if only for the X-Brite screens. Managed to pick up a S3XP pretty cheap from a duty free electronics store and once all the pre installed stuff had been ripped out it runs beautifully. Needed it to be small and light to carry around with a load of photography gear, but fast as possible too, with decent battery life too and its really impressed me and I dont really like laptops that much.
Hmm, think I've been using it more than my desktop lately...

I have a almost brand-New Dell.
It works great. I considered Toshiba, HP, IBM and Sony, but Dell has perfect balance price/performace IMO. I have a Dell 8600c with 1gb ram, 60GB HD (@ 7200rpm). Is no more available, but there are equivalent machines.

ditto - go for a Dell..

I have a VAIO notebook which is good to work on and the screen looks very impressive. The text is antialiased - so web browsing looks very neat. However, only had it a year and the screen flickers from time to time - so beware. It's also very heavy and only last about an hour on the battery.
Just bought toshiba notebook (a new cheap one about £500) which is very nice and no problems so far. However the sony (accepting the above comments) is a better machine but then it was 3x the price.
IBMs are very robust and would be on my shortlist.

a friend who bought a toshiba satellite complained of it overheating and automatically shutting down all the time..plus being very noisy..
i think if you make sure its a centrino you'll be ok
my flatmate has sony vaio, it works great

but then again what do i know?
i use a mac
