he loves me so much he's gonna burn my ass in hell. That's real unconditional that is. Like woah, jeremiah!

kuz, no need to get harsh. I know of no belief system that teaches anything remotely like the Bible's plan of redemption.
If you go the grave of Muhammed, you have to say, "here he lies". If you go the grave of Buddha, you have to say, "here he lies". If you go the grave of Zoroaster, you have to say, "here he lies". If you go to the grave of Christ, you have to say, "WHERE IS HE?" See, in contrast to dead religions which follow dead leaders thru hopeless ritual, Biblical Christianity presents a risen savior who actually dealt with our sin problem and who claimed to be God in the flesh and who offers us forgiveness and eternal fellowship with him as an absolutely free gift. :)

I thought the universalists embrace all faiths, but more importantly dont really care about any of the faiths, seeing them as 'not applicable' to the real world apart from their cultural/social role...

I believe if you do me wrong, the 10 cammandments are null and void.
The golden rule goes both ways:
If that's what they've done to me, that's what they can expect in return

It's curious. I think maybe it's because of our postmodern culture - people are hungering for something deeper than that which they've been persuing.

I hear you can bleach your god shaped holes now.

_smk, regarding your first question about those before Christ, the Bible teaches that people looked forward in faith to the savior God would one day provide and thus were saved (see Romans Ch. 5). In effect, they were saved by looking forward to the cross. We are saved by looking back in time to the cross.
As for those who rejected the promises of God regarding the provision for sin in Christ, they have only the expectation of an eternity seperate from God. For those who have never heard the message of Christ, the Bible is clear that God, a perfect and just judge, will judge them based on the light that they have received. Romans Ch.1 says that everyone is given some knowledge of the creator and will be judged according to what they do with that knowlede. For us though, we have heard the message and are without excuse. :)

The problem is, so many are trying to jam the wrong puzzle piece into the hole. Just my opinion.

(Apr 19 05, 13:10)Yeah, many people are becoming dissatisfied with their church/religion/whatever, because they don't feel that it provides what they're looking for.

#Romans 6 -
"For the wages of sin is death, but the GIFT of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord."
The gift is eternal fellowship with Christ... Christ in us. The Bible says that if we turn to Christ in faith alone and receive what he did for us at the cross and thru the empty tomb... we receive that gift and are saved from our sin and from an eternity seperated from him. :) (see John Ch. 3 and Romans Ch. 8-10).

When Kant argued (rather powefully) for the existance of God. One of his key points was the "Ontological argument" which suggests that everyone is born with a sort of God-shaped-hole, if you will. A longing for a relationship with their creator.
The problem is, so many are trying to jam the wrong puzzle piece into the hole. Just my opinion.

I sometimes wonder if George Bush's declarations of faith are a ruse to hide his allegiance to satanism

Kuz, I'm not about convincing people here. I'm about sharing another point of view. And almost everything I write, is in response to what someone else has already said. Again, I don't start these threads.
That being said, you never know how many honest seekers are viewing these threads and are influenced by what is written. :) I only ask that people go and research stuff for themselves.

Discipler, even the synoptic gospels contradict each other on basic narrative details.

I think people generally take religion less and less seriously as time goes on. Four hundred years ago people would torture you for being anything but their religion, and they honestly thought they were saving your soul. Society is maturing I think.
