i bumped it, called "portfolio websites"
and imo, i think that if the work is good, the 1-pager is very effective

good point. that's something I never considered.
you basicly having your entire site downloaded for each pageview... that's gotta eat up bandwidth fast.

Personally, I like really simple sites that have an easy navigation system.
However, one-page portfolios don't really appeal to me unless the work contained is so captivating that I end up looking through everything.
So, in short, I don't really prefer one-page portfolios.

I've noticed that nobody has much time to gloss over websites with fancy animations anymore. They want to click in and view stuff within a minute and then move on if they're bored within 10 seconds or so. If your site is built with many layers of information dropping down from menu to page to another page then it makes it more a chore to navigate.
I think this will push the software and site construction further than point and click.

it's all down to personal preference.
Personally I love one pagers - it lets me get right to the work without having to fart around with ambigous or flashed-out navigation.

its not a trend, just a simple and effective way of organizing a folio. so users don't get lost and go for a straight approach of the work display.
I'm apologist

I don't know if it's a trend or not, but it has definitely gotten more popular over the past year. Isn't that a trend?

I agree, it's all about what 's in it.
Geocities SiteBuilder folios are going to be the new pink / camo / black.

well, that's kind of what i'm getting at... does the 1 page format WORK better?
is it sending the right message? it's an elegant solution (or can be) but it's simple enough to be confused with lack of technical ability.
- Jaline0
lots of talented, great designers use the format. knock yourself out.

trend? hells yeah. and thus bad? hells no.
like other people have already said, personal preferences, functionality and what works best. works best for your target audience or works best in what you're trying to get across, trying to tell your audience.
and if you just need 1 page for it than that's cool, if you need a flash site for it or 50 pages, cool as well. there are no real rules here.
both 1 pages and multipages have it's pros and contras. what i like about multipages, take presstube for instance, it has an entire archive something what's lacking in 1 pages, archives tell me a lot more about the designer and the growth, style changes etc. but multipages aren't that good in getting your tone of voice accross in a very brief moment, 1 pages are good at that (as long as they don't contain zillions of images) but if you're style is very divers than a 1 page won't work. anyways, i can go on and on, you get the idea.

I just mean that someone could have a mind blowing folio page, but shitty work. Or a plain standard folio page and mind bending work.. you know.. work that bends your mind. literally.

I reckon it all depends on the sort of content you have got... for now we've decided on a simple site purely because for the reason of why would you want to trawl through a site to get to another site... give the user enough info so they know what the project is about and if they want to see the site they click a link... simple
