How do you motion graphics people use music on your showreels?
Do you use copyrighted music, and in this case do you have to pay rights, or is it "ok" to use someone elses music?thx

man.. this issue has been talked through the roof..
i personally think it does not matter .. as long as you are not broadcasting it to a group (like tv or film) and are not making money off of the actual piece that is your reel...
others will tell you any stuff that isn't paid for is illegal.. i've had account execs at NBC tell me it's ok..
personally.. i work at an ABC affiliate.. we are allowed to use 9 seconds and 29 frames worth of music before we can get in trouble for using it in station promotions and such...
so i just splice songs together from different parts..
for me though.. in my personal reels.. it all boils down to..
"it's easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission" and "i didn't sell their song, nor did i sell the piece i used it in"..if i make a personal project.. just for myself.. i should be able to use whatever music i want.. if i decide to show it to some people.. i shouldn't get impaled because of it..

don't get me wrong.. i fully support music and the people who create it..
however.. if you are a struggling mograph designer and have no funds to buy the music.. but want to make a kick arse reel.. i see no reason why you'd have to resort to cheesy stock music or other crap...

in the credits.....preferably before the reel begins .....give the artist credit.....
check out kdlab in the QBN cinema archive

don't use some run of the mill cheesy fashionable electronic music - it makes all reels look the same and it's the first thing I switch off
