Did any of you go to a high school geared more towards the arts?
i know they're pretty popular here in California. They range from boarding schools to day schools... there are several to choose from. OCHSA, LACHSA, Idyllwild Arts Academy, Ojai Valley School, Thatcher School, The Webb Schools, and more. (those are just in southern california im sure there's more)
I went to OCHSA and learned a shit load from i believe some of the best professors around. what was your experience? do you think it made you a better artist?Sometimes i feel bad for the kids who went to regular high school with bad instruction when it came to art... and they had to compete against all these other kids who came from private art schools for very few spots open at the better art colleges around the county.
I was thinking about it last night when someone asked me where i went to high school. when i explained they were surprised and theyve never heard of anything like that before. i thought it would be much more common in our industry.

i went to a regular high school but we had one of the best art programs and best art teachers in western canada. i took jewelry (silversmithing), painting, drawing, sculpture, etc etc, and when i applied for art college i was able to bypass a whole symester because my portfolio was so strong. :)

teh haute.
it's a little bit of an unfair advantage though for regular students that might have enough natural talent to be good one day... but didnt spend the past four years specifically making a portfolio that would get you into art school right away.

i thought you didnt go to college

yeah i went to college. but not an art school. wichita state for 2 years but got sick... came back to cali to regain my health but then started working and never went back. i got swallowed alive by the .com.
what would make you think i didnt go to college? i never said that.

ah yes but they could see my raw talent and therefor i don't feel bad for what happened. they made their judgement and what was i going to say? no sorry i am not going to allow myself a full symester of credits withought having to pay for it :P
tara you thought i didn't go to college? if so, yes i did, twice. once for fine arts and the second for new media design.

naw leah... you were lucky, right?
but what about the regular kid going to high school in like regularTownUSA. Most dont even know what they need to do to get into a school like that until their Jr. or Sr. year... and then they have to scramble.

sucks to be them :P jk
yah i was super lucky, but it wasn't just that i knew what to do to get in, i actually have talent and they saw that.

im sure if they wanted it bad enought theyd figure out a way to go . i went to regular school usa and got in everywhere i applied

i went to a regular high school, we were a 'blue ribbon' school though, which meant that academically we were very strong.
then i went to a university, not an art-only school. i think art school is okay for some, but for me a broader education was very important. after all, having inspiration for making art is as important as having the talent.

oooh ur so talented! Damn! You must be special too cuz you went to a special school?

I went to a regular school and took all the arts classes that I could. Got 90's in all of them. Then I went to university and realized that I hadn't really been taught anything and was blown away by the talent of my peers (many of which went to similar schools as you described).
I guess it would have been nice to go to an arts high school. But I think I received a more rounded education in my 5 years at a regular secondary.

I went to school chock full of rednecks eating bugs. That was pretty special.

"then i went to a university, not an art-only school."
That's what I did too, anzelina. My college had an art school but I was in the BA program, not the BFA, so I took lots of non-art classes.
You know what's funny about art school? The ratio of men to women is 1 to 5. Awesome.

canuck did you ask shellie if ur worthy to post in this thread???
- shellie0
mtestizo, did i say i was sooo talented? or that i was special? nope. but i give you -2 up for your first posting being pretty annoying.

im sure canadian schools have better art programs in regular high schools. Ive noticed in california especially the cut backs on programs like that have been huge. P.E., music and art are the first to go in public schools.
