"information is now a commodity and someone has to organize it all so the public can discrimnate, disseminate and ultimately consume."
Awesome - however I would not agree that it is "by far the most important aspect of our society."

Design in the sense that it helps people function and communicate is important - the design most people don't see - urban planning, communicating things such as in airports, traffic signs etc. Or even products and that.
But most of us I think are whores for branding and lying about products or lifestlyes in order to sell them and make a buck.
Myself included.

information is ideas as well. as far as furthering the human race, the more able we are to recieve new and different ideas, the more opportunties we can explore. design can help filter the good from the bad.

design does not filter the good from the bad- the interruption of design is based on opinion.
The real question here is
"Are designers important."

what do you consider important?
- REDWOOD0
No it isn't! That's why i admire people in the health sector. "Not for the USA !!!!!!"

as designers we have a responsibility to save the world...its a calling, not just a career. (I'm thinking more from the product design/architecture/design for everyday life end of things here)...
but I dont think you should ever see communicaton design and branding and such as trivial... would the world be a better place if we didnt communicate well? or something...

To me the important thing about being a designer is the fact that we designers like architects, fashion designers and artists all contribute to a visual landscape that results in cultural identities. If you look at the big picture, graphic design is important.

what did you just say?

the instore brands are "designed" to look like the original.
design is everywhere in everything man made.
i hate to use the definition but look up the noun. it's cut & dry.
- dr_strangedub0
not really...look at target brand products...

'important' is a relative term
and imporant to whom? me, my client, or the target audience which the work was done for?
i would think that the level of importance would vary with each project for each of these groups.
but to answer the question - yes.
- Gorbie0
true dr dub... that's a fairly recent push to define themselves as a brand.
i was really thinking in terms of grocery/drug store generics.

Some interesting points in here.
For me the frustration lies in that, as designers, it is sometimes hard to see our immediate impact - how we better someone's life on a daily basis. All the BS of dealing with clients and keeping the lights on often clouds my vision. It's lame but I want to go home at the end of the day feeling that I played my part. That is not always easy. This must be especially true for architects whose projects take years to reach fruition.
I guess I'm just a bit down today. After all the weather is crapy in Austin.

is design important?
that question has a simple answer. look at your computers desktop. if it's the origional graphic, then no. if you've changed it to a 'designed' desktop wallpaper. yes.
