just take a good look at a beautful woman and comare her with a big fat ugly chick...who would you be gagging with for a shag with? design makes a diffrent!

what if everyting was gray? all food looked the same? everyone walked around with the same face? design is all around and it makes a huge diffrent.

Once again, what kOna said...

Design is very important. From the natural levels of how a root system is designed to absorb water to the shirt that you are wearing right now. It all plays it's roll. There is so much more to design than just the credits in Fight Club or the reslution of a fast food logo on a napkin. Design is an element that coincides with evolution, creation & need.
Not trying to get metaphysical, but that's just how I feel. go out and look at the mountains, or try to undestand why your liver is located where it is in your body. It's not totally dictated by design, but design plays it's part...
Sorry if I repeated anything anyone said previously. I didn't read the whole thread.

creative industries.

Without advertising there would be no way of telling people what has been made or devised, so I guess 'the creative industries' are very important.

another day another dollar
i am a volonteer designer
so i jokingly say that phrase all the time. If life was about money what's the point you never get enough of it you just live your life trying to get more of it and forgeting about the important people in our lifes.

it's a subtle effect.
it's not at that surface level like a mechanic or a doctor. often the most effective design couldn't be recognized as "design" at all.
it would appear automatic. like the elusive "common sense" we refer to.

is design important?
that question has a simple answer. look at your computers desktop. if it's the origional graphic, then no. if you've changed it to a 'designed' desktop wallpaper. yes.

Some interesting points in here.
For me the frustration lies in that, as designers, it is sometimes hard to see our immediate impact - how we better someone's life on a daily basis. All the BS of dealing with clients and keeping the lights on often clouds my vision. It's lame but I want to go home at the end of the day feeling that I played my part. That is not always easy. This must be especially true for architects whose projects take years to reach fruition.
I guess I'm just a bit down today. After all the weather is crapy in Austin.

true dr dub... that's a fairly recent push to define themselves as a brand.
i was really thinking in terms of grocery/drug store generics.

'important' is a relative term
and imporant to whom? me, my client, or the target audience which the work was done for?
i would think that the level of importance would vary with each project for each of these groups.
but to answer the question - yes.
