This logo is for a higher-education collaborative project called ascend. my gf was asked to help with a website, and after i saw their old "logo" i felt compelled to help. (i am doing this pro-bono).
ASCEND stands for arts and science collaborative electronic network development.
I don't have much time invested in this initial concept, so going a different direction is still a possibility - i just wanted to get some outside opinions.

i like 3 best for some reason...tis nice ...wot font did u use for that? or did u create the lettering yourself?

I like the third one best. But overall I'm not liking ny of them. I can't stand the "s" or the "n" The arrow on the "d" just isn't enough to communicate your message. Overall the type lends itself more to a modern furniture company or record label.
For something like this I might even go down the kitsch road. There were so many cool science-based logos from the 50's and 60's that were very playful but suiting. That's where I'd start.

i think 3 is the most balanced

awrench: in illy i just made a few cirlces and lines with a 10pt stroke.
mr_snuggles: the "s" is what has been giving me the most problems. i had a few others comps that weren't even as successfull as the ones i posted. i added the point on the "n" to TRY to compilment the 45 degree angle of the "e"... mayble i'll remove it.
I was going with a modern feel because this network is totally online based. They wanted to show that they were more forward thinking and try and shake the commonly perceived "conservative higher education model". I will definitely look into some of the arts/science logos from the 50's and 60's though... could compliment it nicely as sort of "bridging the gap" between the old ways and new technology.
thanks for the input!! any others?
cheers,
trent

their server is being rebuilt after a fatal crash. This is all i could find..... not really a logo - but it's what they were using to represent their network....

I agree with Snuggles it is a bit too trendy not very arts & science.
Find logos of similar groups/see if your logo would sit comfortable amongst them.

the arrow seems a bit much to me.
it's give me that "red hott" devil feel, which is certainly not what you're going for.
- bulletfactory0
i agree with you blaw - especially the version with the arrow on the "s" - it sort of has a devil tail quality - wasn't sure if anyone else saw it. hmm.

5 gets my vote.

hey what if you keep all the other letters normal, not hanging over like they do now.. it makes it look unbalanced and can make you feel sort of seasick if you stare long enough..
just keep the trick on the d (ascender) and it might be just fine.
they all look as if you tried a lil too hard imho.
- bulletfactory0
I'm not sure I quite understand what you mean by "hanging over" DutchBoy. would you mind explaining a tad further?
thanks!

Regardless of "Pro-Bono" I would look at it as a nice portfolio piece.
I would most likely have some book imagery and an arrow working. I think in about 3 hours you could really have something functional and you are happy with. I did my last one pro bono and it's one of my fav logos I have done.
Anyways, good luck.

i agree with ya irrelevant
Pro Bono is not Latin for "half-assed"
- grayhood0
can we see it irrelevant?

number 4. Trust me . I'm not wrong often when it comes to design.
