ok. saw it again since a long time yesterday. the new release is aceand the aestehetics are absolutely great and marvellous. the story is, well, halfcooked - but still worth some thoughts.
i personally like the scene the most when THX sits in the cell asking questions and the answers come from the tape. that made me shiver...

You can buy both versions on DVD, try to find a way to see it in the theatre... it's an experience.

yeah thats a releaser, nice shit

Great re-release. Perfect use of post conceptual graphics too. I loved those new panning shots of the droid factory and the accident.

aye all to his own opinion- tho i gotta say the old star wars films had a great story and brilliant characters. cliche'd or not, it was done well.
and be careful not to confuse 'cliche' with 'genre'.
say if you were to make a movie about a gigantic samurai robot destroying a city- WOW, fantastic.. but hey its a cliche, better not do that one.
also- if transfatty landed thx onto your laps you'd be all over it.

word, twooh!!

i just finished watching it, and to be honest.....im so glad Lucas did not overplay the special effects on this. it had the right amount and touch to the film and i really believe this dvd is a masterpiece...
but the principal photography and visual effects were astounding....

it's about style.
i really dug the maximum emotional effect out of ultraminimal setting.
i generally don't like (and it seems i am pretty much alone in this, but who cares..) movies that are jampacked with SFX like Alien and Starwars, because IMO that distracts anything, from story to emotion to motion and composition.
IMO.
:)

starwars is one big sci-fi cliché.
__IMHO!

I have to agree with that review about the sci-fi cliches... to your argument about not focusing on "story", either have it or don't... doing it as half-assed as it was only serves to detract from the style and cinematography.
If, say, Alien had been overly lit and had a guy in a big hokey suit, the poor effects there would take as much away as the poor story did in THX.
Lucas has always created derivative stories, and they were never that strong - from THX up to Episode II, IMO.

there was a movie that was made in 2002 called Equilibrium with Christian Bale...the same theme, etc.
i haven't seen thx yet, but i heard great things about it.

Lucas' student project version right here:

none of the shots in the new one or the one that was released in theatres when it was originally out have shots from his college film, those are two different movies. THX was based on a college film he did.
just picked up the new DVD, dope!
