i dig hot snakes, but i'd say the heyday of punk came in the late 90s with bands like born against, rorshach, etc.

Punk died before it started.

even back 'then'. punk was a marketing ploy 'invented' by malcolm mclaren to sell to kids who would buy shit from his chelsea 'boutique'....

its hard to type because of teh ability of my drunken state, but i will say this:
there are many people that sitll belive in the punk ethic. do it yoruself, anti-corporate, anti-consumerism. creation breeds evolution. purity in art, living, and lifestyle. i'm not talking vegan bullshit, i'm talking just true to the ability to be an indivudidual. and i wholeheartedly believe in what punk rock rperesents. who cares if the music sucks now. the spirtt can stay alive.
(sorry, very very drunk from a circle takes the square show tonight. so please excues typos.)

I hear what prodigalslacker and nosaj are saying. I like to think I still follow the punk ethic. But man... I am not listening to that music these days.
Quality audio reproduction didn't seem to be so high in those days. Ouch on the ears.

punk was the name given to the scene by the record companies so they could catalogue it

very true. i find it very funny that a lot of people bash on bands like green day (who are on a major label) because they 'sold out', when in fact all the hero bands (ramones, clash...) were on majors as well.
however, i think when blink-182 came along and were using the punk sound for pop songs... people reacted with, "wait, they're just using the sound now, that's not punk rock."
hence the current dividing line. but there are some really good punk bands out there these days, the desaparecidos record is still one of the best ones out there. raw, anti-consumerist, amazing.
